''Perameles'' is a genus of marsupials of the order Peramelemorphia. They are referred to as long-nosed bandicoots or barred bandicoots. ''Perameles'', or ‘pouched badger’, is a hybrid word, from the Greek (πήρα, ‘pouch, bag’) and the Latin (‘marten, badger’). More than half the known recent species of ''Perameles'' have been driven to extinction, although these extinct species were long considered conspecific with '' P. bougainville'', a 2018 study determined them to be distinct species. Desert Bandicoot
The desert bandicoot (''Perameles eremiana'') is an extinct bandicoot of the arid country in the centre of Australia. Taxonomy The description by Walter Baldwin Spencer was published in 1897, using a specimen provided by a European correspondent, Mr. Gillen, who had settled at Alice Springs. The holotype was placed at the National Museum in Melbourne. The type location was determined as the Burt Plain, an area north of Alice in South Australia. The status as species is uncertain: it was proposed by L. Freedman in 1967 to represent a clinal form of a ''P. bougainville'' population, yet recognised in a revision of ''Perameles'' phylogeny in 2012. Names of the species by indigenous peoples of the central desert were reported by Spencer as ''mulgaruquirra'' at Alice Springs and ''iwurra'' at Charlotte Waters. Peramelemorphs
The order Peramelemorphia includes the bandicoots and bilbies; it equates approximately to the mainstream of marsupial omnivores. All members of the order are endemic to the twin land masses of Australia-New Guinea and most have the characteristic bandicoot shape: a plump, arch-backed body with a long, delicately tapering snout, very large upright ears, relatively long, thin legs, and a thin tail. Their size varies from about 140 grams up to 4 kilograms, but most species are about one kilogram. Phylogeny Placement within Marsupialia The position of the Peramelemorphia within the marsupial family tree has long been puzzling and controversial. There are two morphological features in the order that appear to show a clear evolutionary link with another marsupial group: the type of foot, and the teeth. The long-nosed bandicoot (''Perameles nasuta''), a marsupial, is a species of bandicoot found in eastern Australia, from north Queensland along the east coast to Victoria. Around long, it is sandy- or grey-brown with a long snouty nose. Omnivorous, it forages for invertebrates, fungi and plants at night. Taxonomy French naturalist Étienne Louis Geoffroy described the long-nosed bandicoot in 1804.
