Pennsylvania Route 554 (PA 554) is a highway which runs for 8 miles (14 km) generally north–south in Lycoming County in north central Pennsylvania in the United States. Its southern terminus is at PA 44 just north of the unincorporated village of Elimsport in Washington Township and its northern terminus is at U.S. Route 15 (US 15) in South Williamsport. Route description Starting at its southern end in Washington Township, PA 554 runs generally north to North White Deer Ridge, which it climbs in a series of curves and two hairpin turns. It crosses into Armstrong Township at the summit and into the valley between North White Deer Ridge and Bald Eagle Mountain, where it passes the Hagermans Run Reservoir. It then follows Hagermans Run down the north side of Bald Eagle Mountain into the borough of South Williamsport, where it ends at US 15. It does not intersect any other highways. Bald Eagle Mountain – once known locally as Muncy Mountain – is a stratigraphic ridge in the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians of central Pennsylvania, United States, running east of the Allegheny Front and northwest of Mount Nittany. Armstrong Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania
Armstrong Township is a township in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 685 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Williamsport, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The first European settlers arrived in Armstrong Township in 1773. Thomas Hartley, Michael Graybill, George Leffler, and John Kern all received warrants for land on February 11, 1773. Hartley then purchased the properties of Graybill, Leffler and Kern on March 31, 1773. This was to avoid a Province of Pennsylvania law that stated that no one man could purchase more than one tract of land. Marcus Huling appears to have been the first permanent settler in Mosquito Valley, which makes up the greatest portion of Armstrong Township. A hairpin turn (also hairpin bend or hairpin corner) is a bend in a road with a very acute inner angle, making it necessary for an oncoming vehicle to turn about 180° to continue on the road. It is named for its resemblance to a bent metal hairpin. Such turns in ramps and trails may be called switchbacks in American English, by analogy with switchback railways. Washington Township is a township in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,769 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Williamsport Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Washington Township was formed as part of Northumberland County in 1786. It originally extended from White Deer Hole Creek north to the West Branch Susquehanna River, with its eastern boundary also formed by the West Branch. The western limit was ambiguous, but most historians assumed that the western boundary followed a line that extended to the south opposite the mouth of Pine Creek in what is now eastern Clinton County.
