Pen Mar is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Washington Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located along the Mason–Dixon line, bordered to the south by the community of Pen Mar Park in Maryland. As of the 2020 census the population of Pen Mar was 947. The community's name is a portmanteau of "Pennsylvania" and "Maryland". Geography Pen Mar is located in southeastern Franklin County, on the western slope of South Mountain. Pennsylvania Route 550 is the main road through the community, leading northwest down the mountain to Rouzerville. Fort Ritchie
Fort Ritchie at Cascade, Maryland was a military installation southwest of Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania and southeast of Waynesboro in the area of South Mountain. Following the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure Commission, it closed in 1998. History Buena Vista Ice Company About 1889, the Buena Vista Ice Company of Philadelphia purchased 400 acres of the land on which most of Fort Ritchie now stands. The company planned to cut natural ice from a manmade lake and ship it to Baltimore, Washington, and southern markets via the Western Maryland Railroad's Baltimore-Hagerstown line. The first lake was created in approximately 1901 and named Lake Royer (the "Lower Lake"). A railroad spur off the Western Maryland line was built alongside the southeastern shore of Lake Royer. Pen Mar Park
Pen Mar Park is a scenic area in Pen Mar, Washington County, Maryland. It is located on Pen Mar High Rock Road adjacent to the Mason–Dixon line. In 1877, the site was opened as an amusement park and resort area by the Western Maryland Railway (WM). During the summer months the railroad offered frequent train service on its "Blue Mountain Express" from Baltimore to Pen Mar. The WM also ran trains from Hagerstown, Maryland to Pen Mar. By the turn of the century, the Pen Mar area had become one of the most popular resort destinations in the eastern United States. Weekday crowds in the summer were often 4,000 to 5,000. The single day park attendance reached close to 20,000 visitors. Many hotels and over 100 boarding houses were built to accommodate the visitors to Pen Mar.
