Pele (American Band)
Pele is an instrumental post-rock band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The group formed in the summer of 1997 by guitarist Chris Rosenau, bassist Scott Schoenbeck and drummer Jon Mueller. Ever-evolving in sound, the band was difficult to classify. Early in Pele's career, critics had dubbed the band post-rock. However, later many fans began to hear them as jazzy, with "nimble" guitars, "rolling" bass, and "skittering" drums "with angular fills and layered beats." These so-called jazz elements shone through untraditional "syncopated handclaps, voices, and various blips and bleeps." After seven years, thirteen releases, and various national and international tours, Pele announced their winter 2004 tour would be their last. The remaining members went on to various projects, most notably The Promise Ring and Paris, Texas, but also New Rising Sons, Volcano Choir, and Collections of Colonies of Bees. Paris, Texas (rock Band)
Paris, Texas was an American punk rock and emo band signed to New Line Records. Background Paris, Texas was formed in Madison, Wisconsin, in December 1997 by Scott Sherpe, Sam Vinz, Nick Zinkgraf (all three of whom were college roommates at the time), Matt Tennessen and Matt Mangan. They recorded a five-song demo tape in January 1998 in Rainer Maria bassist (and Matt Tennessen's former Ezra Pound band mate) Kaia Fischer's basement and played their first show at Whole Music Club in Minneapolis with Rainer Maria the next month on Valentine's Day. Rainer Maria drummer Bill Keuhn brought the band's demo to the attention of Polyvinyl Records and were signed shortly thereafter, releasing a self-titled EP in the fall of 1998, and full-length album ''So, You Think it's Hot Here?'' in October, 1999. Star Star Stereo was an independent record label based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The label existed from 1997–2001 and was operated by Mike Bailey. Star Star released an eclectic mix of post-rock, electronic, indie rock and Americana. The catalog includes records by Pelé (whose lineup boasted members of the Promise Ring and future members of Collections of Colonies of Bees), Casino Versus Japan, Charles Atlas and solo projects from Lambchop’s, Deanna Varagona, and Low’s, Alan Sparhawk. Star Star Stereo became dormant when Bailey turned his focus to an A&R position at Back Porch Records (EMI). Bottom Lounge is a concert hall at 1375 W. Lake St. in Chicago, Illinois. Originally located in Chicago's Lake View neighborhood at 3206 N. Wilton, Bottom Lounge was acquired by the CTA in eminent domain in 2001 and seized for demolition in 2005 to make way for the Brown Line extension project. American Football (band)
American Football (sometimes stylised in all lowercase as american football or americ anfootball) is an American rock band from Urbana, Illinois, originally active from 1997 until 2000, and again beginning with 2014 and onwards. The band was formed by guitarist/bassist and singer Mike Kinsella (formerly of Cap'n Jazz and Joan of Arc and currently of Owen), guitarist Steve Holmes (also a member of the Geese) and drummer and trumpet playeSteve Lamos(formerly of the One Up Downstairs, one-time member of the Firebird Band and Edward Burch & the Staunch Characters, and currently of the Geese and DMS), who has since left the band. Volcano Choir
Volcano Choir is an American indie rock band from Wisconsin, formed in 2005. It has released two albums, ''Unmap'' and ''Repave.'' History The band began as a collaboration between Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and members of Collections of Colonies of Bees. Their debut album, ''Unmap'', was released on September 22, 2009, reaching number 92 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. The band toured on the success of this release, with a large string of shows around Japan in November 2010 being their most notable run. Since the band's formation, Jon Mueller (Death Blues) and Thomas Wincek (of All Tiny Creatures) have left Collections of Colonies of Bees, but continue to be members of Volcano Choir. They have also added Matthew Skemp on bass, who also plays in All Tiny Creatures.
