Peggy Thorpe-Bates
Peggy Thorpe-Bates (11 August 1914 – 26 December 1989) was an English actress who appeared in the first three series of '' Rumpole of the Bailey'' as Rumpole's fearsome wife Hilda. She also appeared in numerous other supporting roles on both stage and screen. She attended Heathfield School, the Cone School of Dancing and RADA, then appeared in repertory theatre in Birmingham, Bristol, Harrogate and with the BBC Repertory Company. Her film appearances included '' Georgy Girl'' and ''Mosquito Squadron. ''On television she had recurring roles in ''Timeslip'' and ''Return of the Saint.'' Vivienne (photographer)
Florence Vivienne Mellish (1889–1982), known simply as Vivienne, was a British photographer and singer. She was married to the artist Ernest George Entwistle (1877–1963), and took up photography in 1934, in order to assist him and their photographer son, Antony Beauchamp, (pronounced Beecham). Another son, Clive Entwistle, was an architect and civil engineer. Her autobiography, ''They Came to My Studio: Famous People of Our Time'' was published in 1956. She appeared as a castaway on the BBC Radio programme ''Desert Island Discs'' on 22 July 1963. 208 of her works are in the National Portrait Gallery, London, National Portrait Gallery, as is one photograph of her, and works by Beauchamp. Return Of The Saint
''Return of the Saint'' is a British action-adventure television series that aired for one series in 1978 and 1979 in Britain on ITV, and was also broadcast on CBS in the United States. It was co-produced by ITC Entertainment and the Italian broadcaster RAI and ran for 24 episodes. Premise ''Return of the Saint'' is a revival/updating of ''The Saint'', a programme based upon the stories of Leslie Charteris that had originally aired from 1962 to 1969, and starred Roger Moore as Simon Templar (the character, in turn, had been introduced by Charteris in a series of novels and short stories dating back to 1928). The new series starred Ian Ogilvy as Templar, an independently wealthy, somewhat mysterious 'do-gooder' known as 'The Saint'. ''Galileo'' is a 1975 biographical film about the 16th- and 17th-century scientist Galileo Galilei, whose astronomical observations with the newly invented telescope led to a profound conflict with the Roman Catholic Church. The film is an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's 1943 play of the same name. The film was produced by Ely Landau for the American Film Theatre, which presented thirteen film adaptations of plays in the United States from 1973 to 1975. Brecht's play was recently called a "masterpiece" by veteran theater critic Michael Billington, as Martin Esslin had in 1960. The film's director, Joseph Losey, had also directed the first performances of the play in 1947 in the US — with Brecht's active participation. ''Peeping Tom'' is a 1960 British psychological horror-thriller film directed by Michael Powell, written by Leo Marks, and starring Carl Boehm, Anna Massey, and Moira Shearer. The film revolves around a serial killer who murders women while using a portable film camera to record their dying expressions of terror. Its title derives from the expression "peeping Tom", which describes a voyeur. The film's controversial subject matter and its extremely harsh reception by critics had a severely negative impact on Powell's career as a director in the United Kingdom.
