Peggy is an unincorporated community in Atascosa County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 22 in 2000. It is located within the San Antonio metropolitan area. History Peggy was founded in the early 1930s when mesquite and brush was cleared out for farmland by laborers at the demands of H.R. Smith and John Mowinkle. A store named Hollywood was built in the community to serve current residents and the needs of other workers. A gin was also built across the road. This community was named Hollywood for several years until a post office was established in the late 1930s and was named for John Mowinkle's niece. It had one business and a population of 25 in 1939. It gained another business in 1943 with the same population. It rose to 50 by 1961 then decreased to 20 by 1968. Campbellton, Texas
Campbellton is an unincorporated community in Atascosa County, Texas, United States. According to the ''Handbook of Texas'', the community had an estimated population of 350 in 2000. Campbellton is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. History An Irish immigrant, John F. Campbell, began the community in the 1860s by promoting settlement in the area. He was the first postmaster in the community when the post office was established in the 1870s. He also opened a general store in the community and held Catholic church services in his home. The population was 25 in 1894 but then grew to 30 in 1890. It had three churches, a gin, two livestock breeders, and a lumberyard during that same time. The community's population went down during the middle of the decade, but it gained a general store and another livestock breeder. Interstate 37
Interstate 37 (I-37) is a Interstate Highway located within the southern portion of the US state of Texas. The highway was first designated in 1959 as a route between Corpus Christi and San Antonio. Construction in the urban areas of Corpus Christi and San Antonio began in the 1960s, and the segments of the Interstate Highway in rural areas were completed by the 1980s. Prior to I-37, the route between Corpus Christi and San Antonio was served by a combination of State Highway 9 (SH 9) from Corpus Christi to Three Rivers and U.S. Highway 281 (US 281) from Three Rivers to San Antonio. As a result of the construction of I-37, SH 9 was removed from the State Highway System. Mesquite is a common name for several plants in the genus ''Prosopis'', which contains over 40 species of small leguminous trees. They are native to dry areas in the Americas. They have extremely long roots to seek water from very far under ground. As a legume, mesquites are one of the few sources of fixed nitrogen in the desert habitat. These trees bloom from spring to summer. They often produce fruits known as "pods". ''Prosopis'' spp. are able to grow up to tall, depending on site and climate.
