Pedasí District
Pedasí () is one of five districts of the Los Santos Province, Panama. History Human settlement in the Azuero peninsula where Pedasí is located dates back anywhere from 11,000 years to 4500 years ago based on pre-Columbian artifacts and other archaeological evidence recovered from various sites on the peninsula. Spanish colonizers arrived in the 16th century, largely wiping out or displacing existing indigenous populations. The district of Pedasí was created in 1840, when Panama was still tenuously united with Colombia (see the History of Panama for more background). At the time, it was a division of the County of Los Santos (today the Los Santos Province, province of Los Santos), in the Province of Panama (which covered all of present-day Panama, except for the provinces of Veraguas Province, Veraguas and Bocas del Toro Province, Bocas del Toro). History Of Panama
The history of Panama includes the history of the Isthmus of Panama prior to European colonization. Before the arrival of Europeans, Panama was widely settled by Chibchan, Chocoan, and Cueva peoples. There is no accurate knowledge of the size of the Pre-Columbian indigenous population. Estimates range as high as two million people. They lived mainly by hunting, gathering edible plants & fruits, growing corn, cacao, and root crops, and lived in small huts made of palm leaves. The first permanent European settlement, ''Santa María la Antigua del Darién'' on the Americas mainland was founded in 1510. Vasco Nuñez de Balboa and Martín Fernández de Enciso agreed on the site near the mouth of the Tarena River on the Atlantic. This was abandoned in 1519 and the settlement moved to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Panamá (present day Panama City), the first European settlement on the shores of the Pacific. El Siglo (Panama)
''El Siglo'' ("The Century") is a Spanish language daily newspaper published in Panama. It was founded on 9 January 1985 and as of 2010 had the largest circulation of any Panamanian newspaper. In 1990, after the fall of military ruler Manuel Noriega in the United States invasion of Panama, the paper offered a prize for the best essays that "explain and detail the criminal acts of the deposed tyrant (Noriega) and his followers." On December 10, 1998, ''Siglo'' reporter Carlos Singares was sentenced to 20 months' imprisonment for defamation for a 1993 article he had written about former president Ernesto Pérez Balladares, accusing him of helping to move money out of Panama for former military ruler Omar Torrijos. Mireya Moscoso
Mireya Elisa Moscoso Rodríguez de Arias (born July 1, 1946) is a Panamanian politician who served as the President of Panama from 1999 to 2004. She is the country's first female president. Born into a rural family, Moscoso became active in the 1968 presidential campaign of three-time president Arnulfo Arias, following and marrying him when he went into exile after a military coup. After his death in 1988, she assumed control of his coffee business and later his political party, the Arnulfista Party (PA). During the 1994 general elections for the presidency, she narrowly lost to the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) candidate Ernesto Pérez Balladares by 4% of the vote. Azuero Peninsula
Azuero Peninsula ( es, Península de Azuero) is a large peninsula in southern Panama. It is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean in the south; the Pacific and Gulf of Montijo to the west, and by the Gulf of Panama in the east. The peninsula is effectively divided into two regions; the Western Azuero and the Eastern Azuero, as no serviceable roads join the two peninsula regions past the Pan-American Highway. The Eastern Azuero Peninsula is known for baseball and is also a center of activity during the annual ''carnaval'' (carnival), with Las Tablas being the hub.
