Payneham Cemetery
Payneham Cemetery, located on Marian Road, Payneham South, South Australia was established by the Argent Street Primitive Methodist church with the first burial occurring in 1864. History The land (Allotment 107 of Section 285) was purchased by the Argent Street Church Trustees from Henry Ellis in 1846. A Primitive Methodist church was opened in 1859 and burials commenced in the cemetery in 1864. There has been significant grave reuse, to the extent that the cemetery was considered not eligible for State heritage protection in 1990, on 26 October 2006 the 1864 cemetery reserve, all headstones and monuments was added to the local register. Robert Kelly (politician)
Robert Kelly (6 May 1845 – 26 October 1920) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the South Australian House of Assembly from 1891 to 1893, representing the electorate of Wooroora. Kelly was a farmer at Riverton, before being elected to fill the remainder of the term of his brother, Hugh Craine Kelly Hugh Craine Kelly (2 December 1848 – 13 January 1891) was a farmer and politician in colonial South Australia. Brian Wibberley
Brian Wibberley (7 November 1866 – 3 June 1944) was a Methodist minister who served for over 50 years in Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia. History Wibberley was born in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, youngest son of farmer Brian Wibberley and his wife Ann, née Riley. He was educated in the grammar school of that town. His mother died when he was 11 years of age, and having been "born again", began teaching at the Sunday school at age 12. He was ordained in 1885 and in 1886 preached at Middlesbrough in Yorkshire. That same year he was sent to Victoria, Australia as a Primitive Methodist missionary. Victoria Wibberley preached his first sermon in the newly completed Primitive Methodist Church in Paisley Street, Footscray on 3 October 1886. George Searcy
George Henry Grass Searcy (15 January 1855 – 6 January 1927) was an Australian sportsman, sports official and accountant. Family Searcy was born on 15 January 1855 in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, the son of Frederick Searcy and Dinah formerly Simmonds née Grass. Elizabeth Webb Nicholls (21 February 1850 – 3 August 1943) was a key suffragist in the campaign for votes for women (also called ' suffrage') in South Australia during the 1890s. Robert Mitchell (1851–1929) was an Australian Presbyterian minister who became the first Presbyterian to be ordained in South Australia. James Marshall & Co. was a department store in Adelaide, South Australia, which was taken over by Myer in 1928. History The firm has its origin in a partnership between James Marshall (1845–1925 — see biography below), a Scots-born draper, and William Taylor (died 1913), accountant, who worked in different branches of the drapery business belonging to J. Edward Lucas (Australian Politician)
Sir Edward Lucas (14 February 1857 – 4 July 1950) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the South Australian Legislative Council from 1900 to 1918, associated with the National Defence League, Australasian National League and its successor, the Liberal Union (South Australia), Liberal Union. He resigned in 1918 to become Agent-General for South Australia, a role he held until 1925. Lucas was born in County Cavan, Ireland, and was educated at Bailieborough. He worked as a draper's apprentice in Dublin, before migrating to South Australia in 1878. Serena Lake
Serena Lake (née Thorne) (28 October 1842 – 9 July 1902) was an English Australian suffragist, temperance activist, and evangelical preacher in South Australia. Early life Serena Thorne was born in England at Shebbear, Devon. She was the daughter of Bible Christian Methodist preachers, Samuel and Mary Thorne. Her grandfather, William O’Bryan was the founder of the Bible Christian Church. Bible Christians allowed women preachers and by the age of 21 she was a widely known preacher through Devon, Cornwall and South Wales. The Hon Andrew Alexander Kirkpatrick (4 January 1848 – 19 August 1928) was an Australian politician, representing the South Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party.
