James Waddell Marshall
James Marshall & Co. was a department store in Adelaide, South Australia, which was taken over by Myer in 1928. History The firm has its origin in a partnership between James Marshall (1845–1925 — see biography below), a Scots-born draper, and William Taylor (died 1913), accountant, who worked in different branches of the drapery business belonging to J. A. "Johnny" Northmore (died 1891). As Marshall & Taylor they opened a drapery business in December 1872 at 12 Hindley Street, a few doors from Beach's restaurant. In June 1875 they opened a second establishment, at 87 Rundle Street. In 1879, the extensive business of John Hodgkiss & Co. came on the market. Both G. & R. Wills & Co. and D. & W. Murray were interested in the company's wholesale business, and agreed that whichever was successful, Marshall should take over the retail side. In common law jurisdictions such as England and Wales, Australia, Canada, and Ireland, a freehold is the common mode of ownership of real property, or land, and all immovable structures attached to such land. The City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters is a metropolitan local government area of South Australia. It covers the inner eastern suburbs of Adelaide. It is divided into five wards: Torrens, Payneham, West Norwood/Kent Town, Kensington (each electing two councillors), and Maylands/Trinity (three councillors). Her Majesty's Theatre is a theatre in Adelaide, South Australia, located on Grote Street, originally built in 1913 as the New Tivoli Theatre. Other names through its history have been the Princess Theatre (before it was first opened), the Prince of Wales Theatre, Tivoli Theatre and the Opera Theatre. It re-opened in June 2020 after a major refurbishment. History 20th century Designed by Adelaide-born architects David Williams and Charles Thomas Good, the foundation stone for the Princess Theatre was laid on 14 October 1912. However, after it was built in 1913, it opened as the New Tivoli Theatre, part of national Tivoli vaudeville circuit, and is the only original Tivoli still standing. South Australian Company
The South Australian Company, also referred to as the South Australia Company, was formed in London on 9 October 1835, after the '' South Australia (Foundation) Act 1834'' had established the new British Province of South Australia, with the South Australian Colonization Commission set up to oversee implementation of the Act. The South Australian Company was a commercial enterprise, and not officially connected to the British Government or the Colonization Commission, but turned out to be indispensable in allowing emigration to the new colony to begin. The founding board of the company, headed by George Fife Angas, consisted of wealthy British merchants, with the purpose of developing a new settlement in South Australia, building a new colony by meeting an essential financial obligations of the ''South Australia Act 1834''. Tattersalls Club, Adelaide
The first Tattersall's Club in Adelaide was founded in 1879 and folded in 1886. It was revived as the South Australian Tattersalls Club in 1888 and prospered as a gentlemen's club, whose membership was chiefly composed of men who enjoyed gambling on horse races. History The South Australian Tattersalls Club had its origin in a Tattersall's Club founded with 55 members on 27 May 1879, with similar rules and objectives to the Sydney and Melbourne Tattersalls Clubs. The meeting was held at the instigation of William Blackler at his Globe Hotel on Rundle Street, and several rooms in the hotel were set aside for the club's activities, principally gambling, no doubt to the benefit of bookmakers. Blackler then sold the publican's licence to fellow horse breeder J. H. Aldridge. William Blackler
William Blackler (1827 – 26 June 1896) was a noted horse breeder and sportsman in the early days of the British colony of South Australia. History Blackler was born at Newton Downs, Devonshire, in 1827, a son of Richard Blackler (c. 1791 – 30 January 1876) and Elizabeth Blackler ( –1851) and arrived in South Australia with his parents, sisters Ellen and Amelia and brothers John and Richard aboard ''Caroline'' in December 1839. His father started farming at Unley. Blackler was in March 1851 barman at the Old Spot Hotel in Gawler, and that same year joined the gold rush for Bendigo, where he was fortunate, returning to Adelaide a wealthy man. By June 1853 he was lessee of the Port Hotel, Port Adelaide. His brother John Blackler was not so fortunate, and died on 7 September 1853 age 30 at the Bendigo diggings. James Henry Aldridge
James Henry "Jim" Aldridge (4 July 1849 – 11 November 1929) was a horse breeder and hotelier in South Australia. He founded the Richmond Park Stud in the Adelaide suburb of Richmond. J. H. Aldridge, as he was generally known, or "Jim" to his friends, was born at Kensington, South Australia, the son of George Aldridge (c. 1817 – 12 December 1879), who emigrated to South Australia in 1847. Before the advent of the Adelaide Town Hall there were three city venues for public functions: Neale's Rooms, White's Rooms and Aldridge's Rooms, all on King William Street. Aldridge's Rooms, which appears in newspaper advertisements between 1860 and 1863, was mentioned as a strong argument against the building of a Town Hall.
