Pauls Putniņš
Pauls Putniņš (12 November 1937 – 1 December 2018) was a Latvian playwright, journalist and politician. Biography He graduated from the Latvian State Conservatory in 1963, after which he worked as an assistant director and director at the Dailes and Liepāja Theatres. A dramatist from 1965, he was one of the most popular Latvian playwrights in the 1970s and 1980s, writing over 30 plays; some 25 of his works were staged in professional and amateur theatres across Latvia. Putniņš is a member of the Latvian Writers' Union and a member of the Union of Theatre Workers, and became a Playwrights Guild member in 1999. In the Latvian independence period he became involved in politics. Paul Walden ( lv, Pauls Valdens; russian: Павел Иванович Вальден; german: Paul von Walden; 26 July 1863 – 22 January 1957) was a Russian, Latvian and German chemist known for his work in stereochemistry and history of chemistry. In particular he invented the stereochemical reaction known as Walden inversion and synthesized the first room-temperature ionic liquid, ethylammonium nitrate. Early life and education Walden was born in Rozulas in present-day Stalbe parish, Pārgauja municipality, Latvia in a large Latvian peasant family. At the age of four, he lost his father and later his mother. Pauls Toutonghi (born 1976) is a first-generation American fiction and non-fiction writer. He was born in America to immigrant parents. Pauls' mother emigrated from Latvia, while his father emigrated from Egypt. His first novel, '' Red Weather'', was published by Random House/ Shaye Areheart Books in 2006. His second, '' Evel Knievel Days'', was published by Random House/Crown in 2012. ''Red Weather'' was widely—and favorably—reviewed. Toutonghi has published work in ''Sports Illustrated'', ''The Burnside Review'', ''Glimmer Train'', ''The Boston Review'', '' One Story Magazine'', and ''The New Yorker''. Pauls Stradiņš Jr. (born 1963) is a physicist at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado, and a foreign member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. Currently he is the principal scientist and a project leader of the silicon photovoltaics group at NREL. He leads a team that recently theorized that defects in photovoltaic cells could actually improve the performance of those cells. Pauls Stradiņš (17 January 1896 – 14 August 1958) was a Latvian professor, physician, and surgeon who founded the Museum of the History of Medicine in Riga. Early life Stradiņš was born in Eķengrāve (german: Eckengraf) (now Viesīte, Jēkabpils Municipality) as the son of a craftsman and pub owner. He graduated from the Riga Alexander Gymnasium in 1914 and entered the S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy in Petrograd (now Saint Petersburg), where his professors included the Nobel Prize-winning physiologist Ivan Pavlov. Medical education During World War I, Stradiņš was an army doctor on the Russian Western Front and in Persia, and then the chief of a surgical department in Vladivostok. Pauls Kalniņš (3 March 1872, in Vilce Parish – 26 August 1945, in Lustenau, Austria) was a Latvian physician and politician ( LSDSP), a long-term Speaker of the Saeima, one of the signatories of the Memorandum of the Central Council of Latvia in 17 March 1944, and was the Acting President of Latvia (1927, 1944–1945). Personal life Pauls Kalniņš was born on 3 March 1872 (from other sources – 3 April) at the Vilce Parish "Mazpečuļos" as a farmer's son. After graduating from the local parish school, he studied at Liepāja Gymnasium, where he met such later statesmen such as Miķelis Valters and Jānis Jansons-Brauns. He graduated from the gymnasium in 1892 and went to study natural sciences at Moscow University, but later moved to the University of Tartu, where he studied medicine, obtaining a medical degree as a Doctor of Medicine in 1898.
