Pauline Vanier Park
Pauline Vanier Park is a public park in Ottawa's Riverside Park area, located on Harkness Avenue. It is named after Pauline Vanier. The park was built in the early 1960s on what had been the Munro farm, next to neighbouring General Vanier Public School. The Riverside Park Community and Recreation Association organized fireworks displays for over twenty years until changes in safety legislation required its removal to a larger area. Riverside Park, Ottawa
Riverside Park is a neighbourhood in the south end of Ottawa, Canada. It is bounded on the north by Brookfield Road, on the east by the Airport Parkway, on the south by the CN rail tracks and on the west by the Rideau River. The neighbourhood includes one of Ottawa's most well known beaches at Mooney's Bay and the Terry Fox Athletic Facility, along with both Vincent Massey Park, Hog's Back Park. Confederation Heights sits at the northern tip of the neighbourhood. It also includes the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, which has hosted professional and amateur golf tournaments. The area is served by Brookfield High School and the General Vanier, Bayview Public Schools, Georges Étienne Cartier as well as the Holy Cross Catholic School. Pauline Vanier
Pauline Vanier, PC, CC, DStJ (''née'' Archer; March 28, 1898 – March 23, 1991) was a Canadian humanitarian who was married to Georges Vanier. Her husband was one of Canada's first professional diplomats, Canada's first ambassador to France, and the first French-Canadian Governor General of Canada from 1959 until his death in 1967. Life and career She was the daughter of Thérèse (''née'' de Salaberry) and Charles Archer, a judge on the Quebec superior court. Her mother was a descendant of Charles de Salaberry, a military officer and statesman in Lower Canada. With her extensive diplomatic experience, Pauline filled the role of vice-regal consort with as much distinction as her husband filled his. General Vanier Public School (Ottawa)
Opened for the 1963-64 school year, General Vanier Public School serves Ottawa's Riverside Park East and South communities. The school was completed in 1963 on what had been the Munro farm. The school accommodated students from kindergarten through grade 6. Grades 7 and 8 were transported by bus from the school to Hopewell Avenue School. At the time of the opening in the fall of 1963, Bayview Public School on Riverside Drive was undergoing renovations. Students temporarily attended General Vanier PS. The school adjoins Pauline Vanier Park, named after the Governor-General's wife. Naming the School The Ottawa public board, which had begun naming schools after vice-regal representatives, sought and obtained the permission of Governor-General Georges Vanier to name the school after him. Maria McRae
Maria McRae (born c. 1966 in Sudbury, Ontario) is a lawyer and politician. She represented the River Ward on Ottawa City Council, covering some of the city's southern suburbs. Born in Sudbury, Ontario McRae has an undergraduate degree in biology and a law degree from the University of Western Ontario. She moved to Ottawa in 2000 working as a legal consultant and teaching at Algonquin College. In the 2003 Ottawa election ran to replace the departing Wendy Stewart. McRae, who was endorsed by Stewart, won a large victory against two opponents in the November 10 election. She was re-elected in 2010, but announced that she would not run again in 2014.
