Pauli Siitonen
Pauli Ensio Siitonen (born 3 February 1938) is a retired Finnish cross-country skiing (sport), cross-country skier. He was one of the most successful long-distance cross-country skiers of the 1970s, and in 1973 became the second Finnish skier to win Vasaloppet. Siitonen competed at the 1968 Olympics, sports-reference.com and won the Finlandia-hiihto in Finland and König-Ludwig-Lauf in West Germany. Siitonen is credited with popularizing the so-called Siitonen-step (or "marathon skate"), the precursor to modern Cross-country skiing#Skate skiing, skating technique in cross-country skiing. Simpele
Simpele is a Urban areas in Finland, built-up area and a List of former municipalities of Finland, former municipality of Finland in the South Karelia region, originally in the Viipuri Province and after the Second World War, the Kymi Province. It was consolidated with Rautjärvi in 1973, becoming its new administrative center. Simpele is an industrial area specializing in forestry. Over half of Rautjärvi's population lives in Simpele. Geography Simpele is named after the lake Simpelejärvi, which was mostly located within Parikkala. The municipality bordered Rautjärvi and Parikkala. Vasaloppet Winners
(Swedish for 'the Vasa-race') is an annual long distance cross-country ski race held on the first Sunday of March. The course starts in the village of Berga, just south of Sälen in western Dalarna, Sweden, and ends in the town of Mora in the central part of the province. It is the oldest cross-country ski race in the world, as well as the one with the highest number of participants. The race was inspired by a notable journey King Gustav Vasa made from Mora to Sälen when he was fleeing from Christian II's soldiers during the winter of 1520–1521 in the beginning of the Swedish War of Liberation. According to legend, he fled on skis. The modern competition started in 1922 and it has been a part of the Worldloppet events since 1979.
