Paul Lindner
Paul Lindner (1861 – 1945) was a German chemist and microbiologist, best known for discovering the fission yeast ''Schizosaccharomyces pombe''. Biography and career Lindner was born in 1861 in Giesmannsdorf near the Neisse River, part of Upper Silesia. He was a chemist, biologist, and microbiologist. While conducting research, he served as a professor at the Agricultural University of Berlin's Institute of Fermentation and Starch Production. In 1893, Lindner discovered the ''Schizosaccharomyces pombe'' (''S. pombe'') species of yeast by isolating it from samples of Bantu beer, a type of East African millet beer. The beer had been sent to Germany in 1890 by Major Hermann von Wissmann, and upon arrival, it was prepared as a pure culture (only the one strain being present). Donaueschingen
Donaueschingen (; Low Alemannic: ''Eschinge'') is a German town in the Black Forest in the southwest of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg in the Schwarzwald-Baar '' Kreis''. It stands near the confluence of the two sources of the river Danube (in german: Donau). Donaueschingen stands in a basin within low mountainous terrain. It is located about south of Villingen-Schwenningen, west of Tuttlingen, and about north of the Swiss town of Schaffhausen. Wort
Wort () is the liquid extracted from the mashing process during the brewing of beer or whisky. Wort contains the sugars, the most important being maltose and maltotriose, that will be fermented by the brewing yeast to produce alcohol. Wort also contains crucial amino acids to provide nitrogen to the yeast as well as more complex proteins contributing to beer head retention and flavour. Production The first step in wort production is to obtain malt, which is made from dried, sprouted cereal grains, including barley. The malt is run through a mill, cracking the husk and exposing the starch inside. The milled grain is then mashed by mixing it with hot water, and then steeped, a process that enables enzymes to convert the starch in the malt into sugars which dissolve in the water. A hypha (; ) is a long, branching, filamentous structure of a fungus, oomycete, or actinobacterium. Budding or blastogenesis is a type of asexual reproduction in which a new organism develops from an outgrowth or bud due to cell division at one particular site. For example, the small bulb-like projection coming out from the yeast cell is known as a bud. Ascomycota is a phylum of the kingdom Fungi that, together with the Basidiomycota, forms the subkingdom Dikarya. Its members are commonly known as the sac fungi or ascomycetes.
