Paul Laubenthal
Paul Laubenthal (born in Cologne, date of birth unknown; died 8 June 1929 in Böblingen) was a German aircraft constructor and pilot. Life Dr. Paul Laubenthal was born as the son of a ship builder in Cologne. He was the brother of painter Fritz Laubenthal. National Soaring Museum
The National Soaring Museum (NSM) is an aviation museum whose stated aim is to preserve the history of motorless flight. It is located on top of Harris Hill near Elmira, New York, United States. The NSM is the Soaring Society of America's official repository. In 1975, the SSA Board of Directors transferred the Soaring Hall of Fame to the National Soaring Museum. The museum features a large collection of vintage and historical gliders. The museum also administers the National Landmark of Soaring program to recognize people, places and events which are significant in the history of motorless aviation. Böblingen
Böblingen (; Swabian German, Swabian: ''Beblenga'') is a town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, seat of Böblingen (district), Böblingen District. Sindelfingen and Böblingen are Geographic contiguity, contiguous. History Böblingen was founded by Count Wilhelm von Tübingen-Böblingen in 1253. Württemberg acquired the town in 1357, and on 12 May 1525 one of the bloodiest battles of the German Peasants' War took place in Böblingen. Lore (glider)
''Lore'' and a copy, ''Musterle'', were high performance sailplanes designed at Darmstadt by Paul Laubenthal. ''Lore'' was flown successfully by the well known glider pilot Wolf Hirth at the 1929 Rhön (Wasserkuppe) glider competition. ''Musterle'' was used by Hirth used to demonstrate the possibilities of "blue sky" thermalling for the first time. Design and development The Akademische Fliegeruppe Darmstadt, founded in 1921, was the first of several Akafliegs associated with German universities intended to give student teams experience of aircraft design. They rapidly acquired a good reputation for inventive glider design. As well as designing and building aircraft as part of their academic programme, they also received some orders from individuals or clubs.
