Patuakhali ( bn, পটুয়াখালী ''Potuakhali'') is a town and district headquarter of Patuakhali District located on the southern bank of Laukathi river in the division of Barisal in Bangladesh. It is the administrative headquarter of Patuakhali district and one of the oldest towns and municipalities in the country. Patuakhali municipality was established in 1892. The town covers an area of 27.03 km2 with a population of 65,000 according to 2011 census. Title There are different opinions about the origin of the name "Patuakhali". The general belief is that the name is derived from Bengali name "Patuar Khal" (Canal of Patua) which flows down the present Patuakhali municipality connecting the Bay of Bengal. It is said that at the beginning of the 17th century the Portuguese pirates used to make regular incursions to this area through this canal. Patuakhali District
Patuakhali () is a district in South-central Bangladesh in the Barisal Division. This district is the main entrance for the beach of Kuakata. Geography It is adjacent to the Bay of Bengal. The area of the district is 3220.15 km2. Patuakhali city is surrounded on three sides by rivers. The two major rivers are Laukathi and Lohalia, which are directly connected with the Bay of Bengal. Patuakhali Medical College (PkMC) ( bn, পটুয়াখালী মেডিকেল কলেজ) is a Public university, government medical school in Bangladesh, established in 2014. It is affiliated with University of Dhaka as a constituent college. It is located in Patuakhali Sadar Upazila, Patuakhali town of Patuakhali District. It has an annual intake of 52 students for its five-year course of study leading to a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. Patuakhali Government Jubilee High School, established in 1887, is one of the oldest schools in Bangladesh. It is located in Patuakhali District. History Origins In 1876, Axmoy Kumar Dey donated land for a school near the present district post office. There was established Patuakhali Entrance School, for students up to class eight. At that time the present school location was farmland. In 1884, Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) Foyz Uddin Hossen allotted property for a more permanent structure, and constructed an eight-room, single storied building there. Instruction shifted to the new building on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887, and the school took the name Patuakhali Jubilee High English School in remembrance of the event. Sohag Gazi ( bn, সোহাগ গাজী; born 5 August 1991) is a Bangladeshi international cricketer. He made his Test debut in first test during West Indies's tour of Bangladesh in 2012, taking six wickets in the second innings. Brajamohan Dutta
Brajamohan Dutta (1826 - 1886) was a Bengali philanthropist and educator. He was the father of nationalist politician Aswini Kumar Dutta. Early life Dutta was born in 1826 at Batajore village, Barishal, British India. He served as a Deputy Magistrate and Sub-judge at the same time in various district of Bengal. Career Dutta was engaged with social work and upliftment of the education and communication system in rural Bengal. In 1867 he played a role to make Patuakhali subdivision.
