Patuakhali-1 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2019 by Shahjahan Mia of the Awami League. Boundaries The constituency encompasses Dumki, Mirzaganj and Patuakhali Sadar upazilas. History The constituency was created for the first general elections in newly independent Bangladesh, held in 1973. Ahead of the 2008 general election, the Election Commission redrew constituency boundaries to reflect population changes revealed by the 2001 Bangladesh census. The 2008 redistricting altered the boundaries of the constituency. Ahead of the 2014 general election, the Election Commission expanded the boundaries of the constituency. ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader
A.B.M. Ruhul Amin Howlader (born 2 March 1953) is a Jatiya Party politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Patuakhali-1 and Barisal-6 constituencies. Since 2020 he is serving as co-chairman of the Jatiya Party. Early life Howlader was born on 2 March 1953. He has a B.A. degree. Career Howlader was appointed the general secretary of Jatiya Party in 2001. He was elected to Parliament in 2008 from Barisal-6 as a Jatiya Party candidate. On 10 April 2013, he was removed from the post of general secretary following a power struggle in the party. He again was elected to Parliament in 2014 from Patuakhali-1. On 19 January 2016, he was reinstated to the post of secretary general. Howlader served as the secretary general of Jatiya Party till 3 December 2018 when he was replaced by Mashiur Rahaman Ranga. Altaf Hossain Chowdhury
Altaf Hossain Chowdhury is a former chief of Bangladesh Air Force and a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician. He served as a minister of home affairs and commerce during 2001–2006. He was a Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Patuakhali-1 constituency in the same period. Career Military Chowdhury started his career as a fighter pilot in the Pakistan Air Force, qualifying as a lead pilot in the Dassault Mirage III. In 1971 he was a Flight Lieutenant. He joined the Bangladesh Air Force in 1972 as a Squadron Leader after being released from detention by Pakistan. Between 1974 and 1977 he was instructor at the pilot training school. 2018 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. According to political scientist Ali Riaz, the elections were not free and fair. The BBC News reported that they were marred by violence and allegations of vote rigging. Opposition leader Kamal Hossain rejected the results, calling it "farcical" and demanding fresh elections to be held under a neutral government. 1986 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 7 May 1986. A total of 1,527 candidates contested the election. The result was a victory for the Jatiya Party, which won 153 of the 300 seats. Voter turnout was 61.1%. Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the winner of the previous elections, boycotted the election. British observers including a journalist termed the elections a "tragedy for democracy" and a "cynically frustrated exercise". The Jatiya Party ( bn, জাতীয় পার্টি, translit=Jatiyo Party, lit=National Party) is a conservative, nationalist political party in Bangladesh and is currently the main opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad, against the Awami League. The current chairman of the party is Ghulam Muhammad Quader. On 3 January 2019, the party announced its decision to join the Bangladesh Awami League-led Grand Alliance after having been in opposition for the previous parliamentary term. The Jatiya Sangsad ( bn, জাতীয় সংসদ, lit=National Parliament, translit=Jatiyô Sôngsôd), often referred to simply as the ''Sangsad'' or JS and also known as the House of the Nation, is the supreme legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Elected occupants are called Member of Parliament, or MP. 1991 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 27 February 1991. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) emerged as the largest party in parliament, winning 140 of the 300 directly-elected seats. The BNP formed a government with the support of the Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami, and on 20 March Khaleda Zia was sworn in for her first term as Prime Minister.
