Patrick Macnamara
Rear-Admiral Sir Patrick Macnamara KBE, CB (11 January 1886 – 4 April 1957) was a Royal Navy officer. Naval career Educated at Bradfield College and the training ship HMS ''Britannia'', Macnamara joined the Royal Navy in January 1901. He served as gunnery officer in the battlecruiser HMS ''Tiger'' during the First World War. Promoted to captain on 30 June 1925, he was given command of the cruiser HMS ''Effingham'' in October 1927 and then the battleship HMS ''Nelson'' in September 1933 before retiring in 1936. He was recalled in 1939, promoted to rear-admiral and served as Flag Officer, Scapa Flow throughout the Second World War. Admiral Commanding, Orkneys And Shetlands
The Admiral Commanding, Orkneys and Shetlands was an operational commander of the Royal Navy. He was charged with the administration of the Orkney and Shetland Islands and operating and defending the fleet base at Scapa Flow that was the main anchorage for both the Home Fleet and Grand Fleet at various times. Battlecruiser
The battlecruiser (also written as battle cruiser or battle-cruiser) was a type of capital ship of the first half of the 20th century. These were similar in displacement, armament and cost to battleships, but differed in form and balance of attributes. Battlecruisers typically had thinner armour (to a varying degree) and a somewhat lighter main gun battery than contemporary battleships, installed on a longer hull with much higher engine power in order to attain greater speeds. The first battlecruisers were designed in the United Kingdom, as a development of the armoured cruiser, at the same time as the dreadnought succeeded the pre-dreadnought battleship. A cruiser is a type of warship. Modern cruisers are generally the largest ships in a fleet after aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships, and can usually perform several roles. Captain (Capt) is a senior officer rank of the Royal Navy. It ranks above Commander (Royal Navy), commander and below Commodore (Royal Navy), commodore and has a NATO ranking code of OF-5. HMS Tiger (1913)
HMS ''Tiger'' was a battlecruiser built for the Royal Navy during the 1910s. The ship was the most heavily armoured British battlecruiser at the start of the World War I, First World War in 1914, but was not yet ready for service. The ship was assigned to the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron (United Kingdom), 1st Battlecruiser Squadron (1st BCS) for the duration of the war and participated in the Battle of Dogger Bank (1915), Battle of Dogger Bank in early 1915, though she was still Shakedown cruise, shaking down and did not perform well. HMS ''Prince of Wales'' was one of six 121-gun screw-propelled first-rate three-decker line-of-battle ships of the Royal Navy. She was launched on 25 January 1860. In 1869 she was renamed HMS ''Britannia'' and under that name served at Dartmouth as a cadet training ship until 1905. Naval Ensign Of The United Kingdom
The White Ensign, at one time called the St George's Ensign due to the simultaneous existence of a cross-less version of the flag, is an ensign worn on British Royal Navy ships and shore establishments.
