Pass A L'Outre Light
The Pass A L'Outre Light (or Pass a Loutre Light) is a defunct lighthouse in the Mississippi River Delta, Birdfoot Delta in Louisiana, United States, located near the mouth of the Mississippi River. Erected to mark the then-active entrance to the river, it was abandoned as that channel silted up. It has been in the path of several noteworthy hurricanes, and was heavily damaged. It is on the Lighthouse Digest Doomsday List, and is critically in danger. The lighthouse is at the center of a nature preserve. History This light was erected to replace the old Frank's Island Light, which was abandoned when the neighboring channel became unnavigable. Rather than construct a new tower, in 1855 the iron tower of the Head of Passes Light was moved to a point near the mouth of Pass A L'Outre, the channel of the Mississippi River extending east from Head of Passes, and equipped with a third order Fresnel lens. A barber's pole is a type of sign used by barbers to signify the place or shop where they perform their craft. The trade sign is, by a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, a staff or pole with a helix of colored stripes (often red and white in many countries, but usually red, white and blue in the United States). A daymark is a navigational aid for sailors and pilots, distinctively marked to maximize its visibility in daylight. The word is also used in a more specific, technical sense to refer to a signboard or daytime identifier that is attached to a day beacon or other aid to navigation. In that sense, a daymark conveys to the mariner during daylight hours the same significance as does the aid's light or reflector at night. Lighthouses In Louisiana
This is a list of all lighthouses in the U.S. state of Louisiana. Notes :A. The abandoned tower remained until 2002 when it toppled over. :B. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused significant damage to the lighthouse. New Canal Light eventually collapsed the following year and was rebuilt/relit by 2012. :C. The jetty that the front light was on has since disappeared. The front light was either removed by human or by nature. :D. The first tower was built in 1832 and collapsed in 1837. The second tower which still stands today was built in 1839 and deactivated after the civil war. The third tower also still stands today and was built in 1871 as a skeletal steel structure. This steel lighthouse lasted until 1965 when a fourth modern tower took its place. In 2007, the 1965 structure was demolished and a new small skeletal metal tower mounted atop a platform stands today. Pass A Loutre Wildlife Management Area
Pass a Loutre Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a protected wetland in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, United States. The WMA is located due south and bordering the 48,000 acre Delta National Wildlife Refuge, accessible only by air or boat, contains the Pass A L'Outre Lighthouse (), and Port Eads is within the boundary. Location The WMA is situated on the lower Mississippi River, starting at the Head of Passes, including an extreme northern portion of the Southwest Pass, all of the South Pass, and Pass a Loutre, in the Plaquemines-Balize delta lobe of the Mississippi River Delta Basin. Delta National Wildlife Refuge
The Delta National Wildlife Refuge is located east of Venice, Louisiana along the Mississippi River. The area formed when a breach in the natural levee of the Mississippi River occurred in 1862 approximately below New Orleans, Louisiana. The refuge was purchased in 1935 with the primary purpose to provide sanctuary and habitat to wintering waterfowl. Access is by boat only. Wildlife and habitat Delta NWR supports a wide variety of wildlife species. Tens of thousands of wintering waterfowl take advantage of the rich food resources found in the delta. Large numbers of other bird species can be found on the refuge, with numbers peaking during the spring and fall migrations. Large numbers of wading birds nest on the refuge, and thousands of shorebirds can be found on tidal mudflats and deltaic splays.
