History The Party for the Economic Development of Abkhazia (PEDA) was founded during its first congress on 26 September 2007 in Sukhumi. Beslan Butba
Beslan Butba ( ab, Беслан Быҭәба, ka, ბესლან ბუთბა) (born February 7, 1960) is a businessman and a former Prime Minister of Abkhazia. He owns Abkhazia's only private television station Abaza TV and is the chairman of the Party of the Economic Development of Abkhazia. Butba was an unsuccessful candidate in the December 2009 presidential election. Early life and education Beslan Butba was born on 7 February 1960 in the village of Chlou in the Ochamchira District of the Abkhazian ASSR. In 1983 he graduated from the Institute for Engineering and Construction in Moscow. In 2009, Butba obtained his Candidate of Sciences degree in Moscow, and in March 2011, his Doctor of Sciences degree in Tula at the Russian Interdisciplinary Centre for Ergonomic Research and Development. Sergei Shamba ( ab, Сергеи Шамба, ka, სერგეი შამბა) is a senior politician from Abkhazia. He is currently a member of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia and Chairman of United Abkhazia. He was Prime Minister of Abkhazia under President Sergei Bagapsh from 13 February 2010 until 27 September 2011. Between 1997 and 2010 he had been Minister for Foreign Affairs under both Bagapsh and his predecessor Vladislav Ardzinba, with only a half-year interruption in 2004. Shamba has twice unsuccessfully participated in presidential elections, in 2004 and 2011. He has been a staunch proponent for dialogue between Abkhazia and Georgia. Almasbei Ivanovich Kchach () was a former government member and vice-presidential candidate from Abkhazia who committed suicide when investigators came to arrest him in connection with an assassination attempt on President Alexander Ankvab. Political career under President Ardzinba On 2 June 1996, President Vladislav Ardzinba appointed Almasbei Kchach to succeed Givi Agrba as interior minister. Kchach had up until that point been head of Ardzinba's own security office. He remained in that position until 2 July 2001, when he was replaced by Supreme Court Judge Zurab Agumava. However, Kchach again became interior minister on 1 November after Agumava was appointed to head the State Security Service. Abkhazian Presidential Election, 2009
Presidential elections were held in Abkhazia on 12 December 2009, the fourth such elections since the post of President of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia was created in 1994. The result was a victory for incumbent president Sergei Bagapsh, who received 63% of the vote, winning a second term in office. Bagapsh competed against four opposition candidates: former vice president and prime minister Raul Khajimba, who came second behind Bagapsh in the 2004 presidential election, and newcomers Beslan Butba, Zaur Ardzinba and Vitali Bganba. Bagrat Uasyl-ipa Shinkuba ( ab, Баграҭ Уасыл-иҧа Шьынқәба; russian: Баграт Васильевич Шинкуба; 12 May 1917 – 25 February 2004) was an Abkhaz writer, poet, historian, linguist and politician. He studied history and languages of Abkhaz, Adyghe and Ubykh people. A prolific poet, Bagrat Shinkuba published ''First Songs'', his first volume of poetry in 1935. His novel ''The Last of the Departed'' is dedicated to the tragic destiny of Ubykh nation, which became extinct along a hundred of years. The People's Party of Abkhazia ( ab, Аԥсны Ажәлартә Апартиа, ka, აფხაზეთის სახალხო პარტია, russian: Народная Партия Абхазии) is an oppositional political party in Abkhazia led by Iakub Lakoba. Its founding congress was held on 20 March 1992, and it claims to be the oldest political party in Abkhazia. At its fourth congress on 22 September 1999, the party adopted its current charter and elected its current Chairman, Iakub Lakoba. The People's Party was one of the parties that stood at the basis of the Forum of Abkhaz People's Unity founded 8 February 2005.
