Parti Québécois Leadership Elections
This page lists the results of leadership elections held by the Parti Québécois. From its formation in 1968 and until 2005 the party president served as party leader. Elections are by one member, one vote. 1968 leadership election (Held on October 14, 1968) * René Lévesque acclaimed Levesque resigned as party president on June 20, 1985. Nadia Assimopoulos becomes interim president. Levesque however is usually regarded as remaining PQ leader during this period. 1985 leadership election (Held September 29, 1985) Bernard Landry withdrew before voting. Johnson resigned on November 10, 1987. Nadia Assimopoulos onces again becomes interim president and Guy Chevrette becomes interim parliamentary leader. Leadership Convention
{{Politics of Canada In Canadian politics, a leadership convention is held by a political party when the party needs to choose a leader due to a vacancy or a challenge to the incumbent leader. Overview In Canada, leaders of a party generally remains that party's ''de facto'' candidate for Prime Minister until they die, resign, or are dismissed by the party. In the federal New Democratic Party (NDP) and some provincial NDPs, the position of party leader was treated as all other positions on the party's executive committee, and open for election at party conventions generally held every two years although incumbent leaders rarely face more than token opposition. Usually, outgoing leaders retains the party leadership until their successor is chosen at a leadership convention. However, in some circumstances, such as the death or immediate resignation of a leader, that is not possible, and an interim leader is appointed by the party for the duration of the leadership campaign. Richard Legendre
Richard Legendre (born January 19, 1953 in Montmagny, Quebec) is a former professional tennis player and politician in Quebec, Canada. Tennis Legendre was born in Montmagny, Quebec. He once represented Canada at the Davis Cup and had a career-high tennis ranking of World No. 232 in singles (December 1978). He played NCAA collegiate tennis at Florida State University in 1972 and 1973. Politics He was the Quebec minister of sports in Bernard Landry's cabinet, after being elected as a Member of the National Assembly of Quebec for the riding of Blainville in 2001. Paul St-Pierre Plamondon
Paul St-Pierre Plamondon (; often identified by his initials: PSPP; born February 17, 1977) is a Canadian lawyer, television columnist and politician. He has been the leader of the Parti Québécois since October 9, 2020. He represents Camille-Laurin in the National Assembly of Quebec. Education Paul St-Pierre Plamondon began his college studies at Collège André-Grasset and graduated in 1997. Jean-François Lisée
Jean-François Lisée (born February 13, 1958) is a Quebec nationalist politician who served as the leader of the Parti Québécois from October 2016 until October 2018. He was first elected a member of the National Assembly of Quebec in the 2012 Quebec election in the electoral district of Rosemont. Alexandre Cloutier (born September 1, 1977) is a Canadians, Canadian politician and lawyer. Gilles Duceppe (; born July 22, 1947) is a Canadian retired politician, proponent of the Quebec sovereignty movement and former leader of the Bloc Québécois. He was a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons of Canada for over 20 years and was the leader of the sovereigntist Bloc Québécois for 15 years in three stints: 1996, 1997-2011 and in 2015. François Gendron
François Gendron (born November 3, 1944 in Val-Paradis, Quebec) is a politician and teacher in Quebec, Canada. He was a Member of National Assembly of Quebec for the riding of Abitibi-Ouest. He has represented the Parti Québécois from 1976 to 2018. Gendron went to the Université Laval and obtained diplomas in pedagogy and administration. He was then a teacher at Cité Étudiante Polyno in La Sarre, a coordinator at the Commission scolaire Lalonde, and an education School counsellor. Gilbert Paquette (born October 19, 1942) is a Canadian university professor, businessman, researcher and politician. Paquette is a researcher at the ''Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur le téléapprentissage'' (CIRTA-LICEF), which he founded in 1992. Jean Ouimet (born September 3, 1954 in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec) is a Canadian politician from Quebec and the president of Naviga-Cité, a multimedia company. Ghislain Lebel (born February 17, 1946 in Lévis, Quebec) is a Quebec politician and notary. Background Ghislain Lebel has been an activist in the Quebec independence movement since his teenage years, having been part of the Rassemblement pour l'indépendance nationale, the Mouvement souveraineté-association and the Parti Québécois since its early days.
