Pirkanmaa
Pirkanmaa (; sv, Birkaland; la, Birkaria, link=no), also known as ''Tampere Region'' in government documents, is a region of Finland. It borders the regions of Satakunta, South Ostrobothnia, Central Finland, Päijät-Häme, Kanta-Häme and Southwest Finland. Most of the water area in the Kokemäki River watershed is located in the Pirkanmaa region, although Lake Vanajavesi is partly in the Kanta-Häme region. The region got its name from Pirkkala, which in the Middle Ages comprised most of present-day Pirkanmaa. Tampere is the regional center and capital of Pirkanmaa, and at the same time the largest city in the region. Signe Brander
Signe Viola Brander (15 April 1869 – 17 May 1942) was a Finnish photographer. She is best known for documenting the changing cityscapes of Helsinki and the everyday lives of the city's inhabitants in the early 20th century. Early life Brander was born in Parkano and spent her childhood and youth in Kokkola. After her customs official father died in 1891, the family moved to Helsinki. There Brander took a course in the University of Art and Design to become a drawing teacher, but later focused on photography, working for instance in the studio of Daniel Nyblin. City photography In 1906 the city of Helsinki founded an antiquities board. One of its duties was to document the changing city in photographs. The board hired Brander. Even though a woman photographer was not a rarity in the beginning of the 20th century, there were few working as city photographers. Saija Varjus
Saija Varjus (born 30 January 1965 in Parkano) is a Finnish popular musician. She was chosen the "Tango Queen" 1996 in the Tangomarkkinat festival in Seinäjoki. This was her second attempt: she had competed in 1993 but only reached as far as the semifinal. Biography Varjus had previously worked as a teacher. Her most famous recordings include "Dam dam da da di dum" (1997), "Vastatuuleen" (1998), "Kuiskaten" (2002) and "Ihana aamu" (2002). Walto Wihtori Tuomioja (7 March 1888, in Parkano – 2 October 1931) was a Finnish lawyer, journalist and politician. At first active in the Young Finnish Party, he was a member of the Parliament of Finland from 1924 to 1929 and again from 1930 until his death in 1931, representing the National Progressive Party. Tuomioja was the editor of Helsingin Sanomat from 1927 to 1931. Ylöjärvi () is a town and a municipality in the Pirkanmaa region, northwest of Tampere and north of the capital city Helsinki in Finland. The town has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The population density is . Ylöjärvi is mostly a rural town. It does not have a clear center; the Tampere–Vaasa highway ( E12) and the Tampere–Seinäjoki railway divide the municipality's town center into two major distinct parts: the church village and Soppeenmäki. Kari Aaro Juhani Asikainen (born 24 October 1939 in Parkano, Finland) is a Finnish interior designer and former professor of Industrial Furniture Design at MUOVA, the Design Centre of Western Finland in Vaasa, 1988–1994.
