Park West School Division
The Park West School Division is a school district in Manitoba near the border with Saskatchewan. It was formed in 2002 from the merger of the Birdtail River and Pelly Trail School Divisions. History The Pelly Trail division made a controversial decision not to allow Manitoba Premier Howard Pawley to address a group of high-school students in 1985. Trustee Len Derkach argued that the school board "wanted to keep politics out of the school system", although a spokesperson for the premier indicated that the talk would not have been partisan in nature. Howard Pawley
Howard Russell Pawley (November 21, 1934 – December 30, 2015) was a Canadian politician and professor who was the 18th premier of Manitoba from 1981 to 1988. Prior to his premiership, Pawley served in various ministerial positions after his tenure in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. Early life The son of Methodist parents, Pawley was born in Brampton, Ontario, moved to Winnipeg at the age of 17 and was educated at Manitoba Teachers College, United College and the Manitoba Law School. In 1960, he married Adele Schreyer, a cousin of Edward Schreyer, who served as Premier of Manitoba from 1969 to 1977. Len Derkach
Leonard "Len" Derkach (born January 21, 1945) is a former politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a cabinet minister in the government of Gary Filmon, and was a member of the Manitoba legislature from 1986 to 2011. The son of Nicholas Derkach and Minnie Kalyniak, he was born in Rossburn, Manitoba, and was educated at Brandon University. He worked as a teacher and farmer before entering provincial politics. He was also a school board trustee on the Pelly Trail School Board from 1979 to 1985, serving as chair from 1982 to 1985. In 1974, he married Margaret Ann Helten. In 1986, Derkach was elected to the provincial legislature as a Progressive Conservative in Roblin-Russell, a rural riding in the province's southwest.
