Papaveraceae
The Papaveraceae are an economically important family of about 42 genera and approximately 775 known species of flowering plants in the order Ranunculales, informally known as the poppy family. The family is cosmopolitan, occurring in temperate and subtropical climates (mostly in the northern hemisphere), but almost unknown in the tropics. Most are herbaceous plants, but a few are shrubs and small trees. The family currently includes two groups that have been considered to be separate families: Fumariaceae and Pteridophyllaceae. Description The plants may be annual, biennial, or perennial. Usually herbaceous, a few species form shrubs or evergreen trees. They are lactiferous, producing latex, which may be milky or watery, coloured or plain. All parts contain a well-developed duct system (these ducts are called "laticifers"), producing a milky latex, a watery white, yellow or red juice. The simple leaves are alternate or sometimes whorled. They have petioles and are not enc ...

Sanguinaria
''Sanguinaria canadensis'', bloodroot, is a perennial, herbaceous flowering plant native to eastern North America. It is the only species in the genus ''Sanguinaria'', included in the poppy family Papaveraceae, and is most closely related to ''Eomecon'' of eastern Asia. ''Sanguinaria canadensis'' is sometimes known as Canada puccoon, bloodwort, redroot, red puccoon, and black paste. Plants are variable in leaf and flower shape, and have been separated as a different subspecies due to these variable shapes, indicating a highly variable species. In bloodroot, the juice is red and poisonous. Products made from sanguinaria extracts, such as black salve, are escharotic and can cause permanent disfiguring scarring. Although preliminary studies have suggested that sanguinaria may have potential applications in cancer therapy, clinical studies are lacking, and its use is not recommended. Description Bloodroot grows from tall. It has one large basal leaf, up to across, with five t ...

Macleaya
''Macleaya'', or plume poppy, is a genus of two or three species of flowering plants in the poppy family Papaveraceae, native to Japan ('' Macleaya cordata'') and China ('' Macleaya miclocarpa''). They are large rhizomatous herbaceous perennials with palmately lobed, frilly leaves of olive green or grey colour, long, and tall stems with airy plumes of petal-less, tubular, off-white or cream flowers. ''Macleaya'' is named after the Scottish entomologist Alexander Macleay (1767-1848). Cultivation Both of the known species and the hybrid are cultivated as ornamental plants. The individual flowers are insignificant, but the combined effect of multiple stems four to six feet high can give a striking architectural effect. The plants are unsuitable for small gardens because of their invasive tendencies, but can be very effective as features in large gardens. They spread both by underground suckers and by seeding, so can be difficult to get rid of in some situations. The cultivar '' ...

Hylomecon
''Hylomecon vernalis'', also known as the forest poppy, is a poppy of the Far East, ranging from Manchuria to Japan. This poppy is a perennial that spreads via rhizomes, typically no taller than 30 cm. The pinnate leaves usually have five soft green leaflets, although three and seven occur as well, each with a shape ranging from lanceolate-oblong to rhombic, and a pattern of distinct teeth along the margins. The flowers are bright yellow 3.5–5 cm across, starting out bowl-shaped, then flattening out with age. Its typical habitat is moist shaded woodland, growing in accumulated humus. Although generally considered a monotypic genus, the species is somewhat variable, and several variations have been named as separate species. It is distributed in South Korea (north of Gyeonggi Province), Manchuria (China), Haerong River (Korea Korea ( ko, 한국, or , ) is a peninsular region in East Asia. Since 1945, it has been divided at or near the 38th parallel, with ...

Stylophorum
''Stylophorum'' ( celandine-poppy) is a genus of three species of herbaceous perennial plants native to woodland in eastern North America and China. Stems are bristly, and leaves are lobed and have wavy edges. Flowers are yellow and have four petals and an unusually long style, for which the genus is named. Several may be found on each stem. The closely related '' Hylomecon vernalis'' has only one flower on each stem, and the greater celandine (''Chelidonium majus'') has branched stems and no bract In botany, a bract is a modified or specialized leaf, especially one associated with a reproductive structure such as a flower, inflorescence axis or cone scale. Hunnemannia
''Hunnemannia'' is a monotypic genus of flowering plants in the poppy family Papaveraceae, containing the single species ''Hunnemannia fumariifolia'' (tulip poppy or Mexican tulip poppy) native to the highlands of Mexico. It is typically found at elevations of in the Chihuahuan Desert and south into central Mexico, where it favors rocky habitats, occurring along roadsides as well. It is a perennial whose erect stems are somewhat woody at the base, and may reach in height. The leaves resemble those of the closely related ''Eschscholzia'', being finely divided into many gray-green linear lobes. The flowers are solitary yellow cups formed from four overlapping petals, 5–7 cm across, vaguely resembling the unrelated tulip; the two sepals underneath typically fall away as the flower opens. The numerous stamens are short, with orange anthers. The long thin fruits are also reminiscent of ''Eschscholzia''. The genus is named for English botanist and collector John Hunnemann ( ...
