The 10 cm PAW 1000 - later re-designated 10H64 - was a lightweight anti-tank gun that utilized a high-low pressure system to fire hollow charge warheads (and most likely high explosive and smoke shells). Description Background By 1943, it was becoming obvious to the German army that conventional anti-tank gun design had reached its practical limits. Traditional high-velocity guns that relied on kinetic energy to defeat heavily armored targets were becoming so bulky in order to deal with the new generation of tanks that they were becoming too heavy for front line use, and too expensive to produce. Rheinmetall Rheinmetall Borsig proposed a new medium velocity gun with a smoothbore barrel that relied on hollow charge ammunition to defeat tanks. The PAW 600 (''Panzerabwehrwerfer 600'', officially designated 8H63) was a lightweight anti-tank gun that used the high-low pressure system to fire hollow charge warheads. In 1945, it was used operationally by the ''Wehrmacht'' in small numbers. Only about 260 were produced before the war's end. Background By 1943, the German army was faced with various problems concerning their existing anti-tank gun designs. They had started the war with the 3.7 cm PaK 36, which had the advantage of being very light at 328 kg, so that it could be moved a reasonable distance by hand using only its own crew. By 1941, this gun was inadequate; it could not deal with the heaviest armoured Soviet and British tanks. The 10 cm Nebelwerfer 35 (10 cm NbW 35) was a heavy mortar used by Germany during World War II. Much like the American M2 4.2 inch mortar it was intended to deliver chemical munitions, such as gas and smoke shells. Unlike the American weapon it appears to have had an ordinary high-explosive shell from the beginning. It was of conventional design, and was virtually a scaled-up 8 cm GrW 34.
