Paninaro (song)
"Paninaro" is a song by English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys. Originally a B-side to the 1986 single "Suburbia", it was released as a limited-edition single in Italy that same year. In 1995, a re-recording titled "Paninaro '95" was released to a wider market, to promote the duo's B-side compilation album ''Alternative'' (though only the original version was included on the compilation). Background The song is about the 1980s Italian youth subculture known as the paninari; derived from the word ''panino'', Italian for sandwich, they were known for congregating in restaurants serving sandwiches and in the first US-style fast food restaurants, as well as their preference for designer clothing and 1980s pop music such as the New Romantic music of Italo disco. Neil Tennant has said that they were drawn to the concept due to having shared those preferences. New Romanticism
The New Romantic movement was an underground subculture movement that originated in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The movement emerged from the nightclub scene in London and Birmingham at venues such as Billy's and The Blitz. The New Romantic movement was characterised by flamboyant, eccentric fashion inspired by fashion boutiques such as Kahn and Bell in Birmingham and PX in London. Early adherents of the movement were often referred to by the press by such names as Blitz Kids, New Dandies and Romantic Rebels. Influenced by David Bowie, Marc Bolan and Roxy Music, the New Romantics developed fashions inspired by the glam rock era coupled with the early Romantic period of the late 18th and early 19th century (from which the movement took its name). Angel Moraes (August 7, 1965 – February 27, 2021) was an electronic music DJ from Brooklyn, New York. Career He began his career in the 1980s and was the DJ at NYC nightclubs including Paradise Garage, and formed the record label Hot 'N' Spycy in 1993. One of his own first releases on the label was "Release Yourself". In 1995 his single "Heaven Knows" reached number 25 on Billboard's Dance charts, and in 1996 his track "Burnin' Up" reached number 41 on the same chart. In 1996 his label began a distribution deal with UK label Subversion Records. Over his career he co-created music with other electronica musicians, including Junior Vasquez. Baltimora was an Italian music project from Milan, active from 1984 to 1987. They are best known for their 1985 single "Tarzan Boy" and are often considered a one-hit wonder in the United Kingdom and the United States. In other European countries, including their native Italy, Baltimora scored a follow-up hit. History Early years In early 1984, Maurizio Bassi, a music producer and musician from Milan, met Jimmy McShane, a native of Derry, Northern Ireland.
