Palmetto Regiment
The Palmetto Regiment of Volunteers of South Carolina was an infantry regiment that participated in the Mexican–American War. It suffered heavy losses and was known for the first American colors over Mexico City, when it raised its regimental flag. The South had contributed many more troops to the war than did the North, as its leaders supported a policy of expansion of slavery into the Mexican territories. History President James K. Polk called for volunteers for the Mexican–American War. During the war, the South contributed many more troops than did the North. It supported the war in the hopes of extending slavery into the Southwest Mexican territories. Soon in 1846 South Carolina's "Palmetto Regiment" was formed. ''The Atlanta Journal-Constitution'' is the only major daily newspaper in the metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia. It is the flagship publication of Cox Enterprises. Samuel McGowan (general)
Samuel McGowan (October 19, 1819 – August 9, 1897) was an American military officer, lawyer, politician, judge, and a Brigadier general in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. Born in South Carolina, he commanded a brigade in A.P. Hill's famous "Light Division" and was wounded several times. Ezra Warner's book, ''Generals in Gray'', claims that "McGowan's career and reputation were not excelled by any other brigade commander in the Army of Northern Virginia." Arthur Middleton Manigault (October 26, 1824 – August 17, 1886) was a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Early life and career Manigault was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1824. His parents were Joseph and Charlotte Manigault. His grandfather, Peter Manigault, was the richest person in British North America in 1770. James Holt Clanton
James Holt Clanton (January 8, 1827 – September 27, 1871) was an American soldier, lawyer, legislator, and was later also a Confederate combatant. He enlisted in the United States Army for service during the Mexican–American War, and later was a Confederate Army brigadier general during the American Civil War. Following the war he returned to practicing law and later was murdered in a private feud in Tennessee. Early life and career Clanton was born in 1827 in Columbia County, Georgia, a son of Nathaniel Holt Clanton. In 1835 the family relocated to Macon County, Alabama, where Clanton was raised and educated. Later he attended the University of Alabama located in Tuscaloosa, but he did not graduate. James Willis Cantey
General James Willis Cantey (November 30, 1794 – August 20, 1860) was a brigadier general in the South Carolina Militia, and a member of the South Carolina Legislature. He was born in Camden, South Carolina, to James Cantey and Martha Whitaker. Cantey married Camilla Floride Richardson, the granddaughter of General Richard Richardson (general) and sister of Governor John Peter Richardson II, and they had nine children. In 1813 Cantey served in Captain John Irwin's cavalry company in the Creek Indian hostilities. Cantey fought in the battles of Ottosee and Talassee. He fought in close combat and was given commendations for his gallantry in battle. Cantey was elected Sheriff of Camden District in 1833, and was elected Brigadier General of the 5th Brigade in 1834. James Cantey (December 30, 1818 – June 30, 1874) was a Confederate States Army brigadier general during the American Civil War. He was a lawyer, slave owner, state legislator in South Carolina and officer in the Mexican–American War, and a slave owner in Alabama both before and after the war.
