Palmer Inquiry
The Palmer Inquiry was an inquiry led by former Australian Federal Police commissioner Michael John "Mick" Palmer into the unlawful detention of Cornelia Rau, an Australian citizen, suspected of being an illegal immigrant. The report was issued on 6 July 2005 at the request of and to the Minister of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, Amanda Vanstone. The inquiry also initially looked at the " Vivian Alverez Matter", an incident with some similarities, which was taken up and completed by the Commonwealth Ombudsman, Neil Comrie. Michael John Palmer
Michael John Palmer, (b. 1941) is a retired Australian police officer and lawyer who was the Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police. Early life Mick Palmer was born in Coventry, England, in 1941. The Palmer family moved to Australia in 1953 and in 1963 Michael "Mick" Palmer joined the Northern Territory Police. Policing career Palmer reached the position of inspector in 1975. Between 1979 and 1982 he completed his law degree then practiced at the Queensland bar. In late 1983 he returned to the NT police as chief inspector, taking the top job as police commissioner in January 1988. Cornelia Rau
Cornelia Rau is a German and Australian citizen who was unlawfully detained for a period of ten months in 2004 and 2005 as part of the Australian Government's mandatory detention program. Her detention became the subject of a government inquiry which was later expanded to investigate over 200 other cases of suspected unlawful detention by the Australian government's Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA). She disappeared from Manly Hospital on 17 March 2004, and, in February 2005, it was revealed that she had been unlawfully detained at Brisbane Women's Correctional Centre, a prison, and later at Baxter Detention Centre, after being classified as a suspected illegal immigrant or non-citizen by the Immigration Department when she refused to reveal her true identity. Amanda Eloise Vanstone (née O'Brien; born 7 December 1952) is an Australian former politician and a former Ambassador to Italy. She was a Liberal Senator for South Australia from 1984 to 2007, and held several ministerial portfolios in the Howard Government. Vivian Solon
Vivian Alvarez Solon (born 30 October 1962) is an Australian who was unlawfully removed to the Philippines by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) in July 2001. In May 2005, it became public knowledge that she had been deported, although DIMIA knew of its mistake in 2003. Solon's family had listed her as a missing person since July 2003, and until May 2005, did not know that she had been deported. The circumstances surrounding Solon's unlawful deportation have caused much controversy in the Australian media. Murray Neil Comrie AO, APM (born 10 March 1947 in Ballarat, Victoria), known as Neil Comrie, is a former Australian police officer. He was Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police from 1993 to 2001. Police career Neil Comrie joined Victoria Police in 1967, continuing a family line of Victorian police officers including his father and grandfather.
