Pallaviciniites
The lowermost Upper Devonian fossil ''Pallaviciniites'' was for a time the oldest known liverwort until '' Metzgeriothallus'' was recovered from earlier Devonian strata. It had a central axis, and bifurcated at its tips; similar fossils have been found in younger strata through to the Pleistocene. With the exception of its elongated axial conducting (non-vascular) cells, the thallus was a single cell thick. It had a serrated margin. Prior to its discovery, the oldest known liverworts dated to the Lower Carboniferous. Metzgeriothallus
''Metzgeriothallus sharonae'' is the oldest known liverwort fossil, dating to the Middle Devonian. It is a simple, thalloid organism. ''M. metzgerioides'' is known from more fragmentary material dating to the Carboniferous of Scotland. References

Metzgeriales
Metzgeriales is an Order (biology), order of Marchantiophyta, liverworts. The group is sometimes called the simple thalloid liverworts: "thallus, thalloid" because the members lack structures resembling stems or leaves, and "simple" because their tissues are thin and relatively cellular differentiation, undifferentiated. All species in the order have a small gametophyte stage and a smaller, relatively short-lived, sporophyte, spore-bearing stage. Although these plants are almost entirely restricted to regions with high humidity or readily available moisture, the group as a whole is widely distributed, and occurs on every continent except Antarctica. Description Members of the Metzgeriales typically are small and thin enough to be translucent, with most of the tissues only a single cell layer in thickness. Because these plants are thin and relatively undifferentiated, with little evidence of distinct tissues, the Metzgeriales are sometimes called the "simple thalloid liverwor ...

Frasnian Life
The Frasnian is one of two faunal stages in the Late Devonian Period. It lasted from million years ago to million years ago. It was preceded by the Givetian Stage and followed by the Famennian Stage. Major reef-building was under way during the Frasnian Stage, particularly in western Canada and Australia. On land, the first forests were taking shape. In North America, the Antler orogeny peaked, which were contemporary with the Bretonic phase of the Variscan orogeny in Europe. The Frasnian coincides with the second half of the "charcoal gap" in the fossil record, a time when atmospheric oxygen levels were below 13 percent, the minimum necessary to sustain wildfires. North American subdivisions of the Frasnian include * West Falls Group * Sonyea Group * Genesee Group Name and definition The Frasnian Stage was proposed in 1879 by French geologist Jules Gosselet Jules-Auguste Gosselet (19 April 1832 – 20 March 1916) was a French geologist born in Cambrai, France.

Prehistoric Plant Genera
Prehistory, also known as pre-literary history, is the period of human history between the use of the first stone tools by hominins 3.3 million years ago and the beginning of recorded history with the invention of writing systems. The use of symbols, marks, and images appears very early among humans, but the earliest known writing systems appeared 5000 years ago. It took thousands of years for writing systems to be widely adopted, with writing spreading to almost all cultures by the 19th century. The end of prehistory therefore came at very different times in different places, and the term is less often used in discussing societies where prehistory ended relatively recently. In the early Bronze Age, Sumer in Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley Civilisation, and ancient Egypt were the first civilizations to develop their own scripts and to keep historical records, with their neighbors following. Most other civilizations reached the end of prehistory during the following Iron Age. T ...
