Palazzo Aldrovandi
The Palazzo Aldovrandi is a ''Senatorial'' palace on Via Galliera 8 in Bologna, built in Rococo style. History Replacing an older construction, the palace we see today began in 1725 under the patronage of the Cardinal Pompeo Aldrovandi with plans commissioned from Franco Maria Angelini. After Angelini's death in 1731, the work, including the Rococo facade, ornamented with Istrian marble, continued by 1741 under Alfonso Torreggiani. He designed the palaces ornate and peculiar Rococo windows with almost undulating arches superiorly. The palace lacks the typical porticos seen in older Bolognes palaces. One house over on Via Galliera 4, the Palazzo Torfanini has a Renaissance architecture ground arcade, but a piano nobile refurbished with windows by the same architect Torreggiani. Rococo
Rococo (, also ), less commonly Roccoco or Late Baroque, is an exceptionally ornamental and theatrical style of architecture, art and decoration which combines asymmetry, scrolling curves, gilding, white and pastel colours, sculpted moulding, and ''trompe-l'œil'' frescoes to create surprise and the illusion of motion and drama. Pompeo Aldrovandi
Pompeo Aldrovandi (23 September 1668 – 6 January 1752) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Biography Aldrovandi was born on 23 September 1668 in Bologna, then part of the Papal States, and studied law at the local university, being awarded a doctorate in canon and civil law in 1691. He entered the Roman Curia five years later and then steadily climbed the career ladder in the administration and was ordained priest in 1710, served as a ''chargé d'affaires'' in the nunciature in Spain from 1712 to 1716. On 5 October 1716 he became titular archbishop of Neocaesarea and was appointed Nuncio in Spain in 1717. However, the political troubles between the Holy See and the King of Spain led to his being recalled to Bologna, where he stayed until the death of Pope Clement XI. Alfonso Torreggiani
Alfonso Torreggiani (1682–1764) was an Italian architect of the Rococo period, principally associated with Bologna. Life Torregiani was born in Budrio. An apprentice of Giuseppe Antonio Torri, he became intensely active in the city of Bologna working on the design of churches and private buildings and as a consultant on the organisation and reconstruction of existing buildings: for example, the Church of Sant'Ignazio, 1726; the interior of the Church of La Maddalena, 1735; the Palazzo Torfanini (then property of the Princes of Este) in the Via Galliera, 1735; continued the construction of the Palazzo Aldrovandi in 1741, the west front of the cathedral, 1744–52, and the high altar in the Basilica of San Domenico. Palazzo Torfanini, Bologna
The Palazzo Torfanini is a Renaissance architecture palace located on Via Galliera 4, in central Bologna. It is located near the Palazzo Aldrovandi. The palace, with typical facade arcades, was commissioned by Bartolomeo Torfanini in 1544. The interiors were frescoed in 1549 by Nicolo dell'Abate. The exterior fresco work by Girolamo da Treviso and Prospero Fontana has long decayed. In 1732, the palace was refurbished by Alfonso Torreggiani for the Princesses Benedetta and Amalia d'Este of Modena. His contribution is noted in the window frames of the piano nobile. The Abate frescoes were destroyed by Torregiani's reconstruction. The art collector Giacomo Bartolomeo Beccari asked the painter Domenico Fratta to copy the frieze and frescoes, however these copies were stolen from the Institute of Science of Bologna where they were kept. The ''piano nobile'' (Italian for "noble floor" or "noble level", also sometimes referred to by the corresponding French term, ''bel étage'') is the principal floor of a palazzo. This floor contains the main reception and bedrooms of the house. Santa Maria Maggiore is a former Collegiate, Roman Catholic church, located on Via Galliera #10 in central Bologna, Italy. It is a house over from the Palazzo Aldrovandi. Stefano Orlandi
Stefano Orlandi (1681 – 29 July 1760) was an Italian painter, active mainly in Bologna in the architectural perspective painting. He is known for painting fanciful architectural canvases, known as Capricci. Biography He trained with his father, Odoardo Orlandi, a pupil of Lorenzo Pasinelli. Stefano first aspired to be a stucco artist, but then began learning from a mediocre local painter known as Antonio Rizzini. He then entered the studio of Pompeo Aldrovandini, who taught him quadratura, and with Pompeo, he went to Rome starting in 1713 where he completed scenography for the Teatro Capranica. Vittorio Maria Bigari
Vittorio Bigari (1692 – 1776) was an Italian painter of the late-Baroque period. Biography He was born in Bologna in 1692. His main biographer was Zanotti. He was initially trained in the art of stucco and sculpture, a pupil of Antonio Dardani; then became an assistant to the scenographer C. A.
