Palais des Sports Maurice Thorez, or Palais des Sports de Nanterre, is an indoor sporting arena that is located in Nanterre, Paris, France. The arena is named after Maurice Thorez. The capacity of the arena for basketball games is 3,000. It is the home arena of the French League basketball club Nanterre 92 for French national domestic league games and also for EuroCup and Champions League games. History The arena's original seating capacity of 1,594 for basketball games was increased to 3,000 with a €5 million construction works and updates renovation project that was completed in 2015. The renovation project was approved in order for the arena to meet the arena standards of the top tier French Pro A League, and the seating capacity requirements of Europe's second tier level basketball competition, the EuroCup. Nanterre (, ) is the prefecture of the Hauts-de-Seine department in the western suburbs of Paris. It is located some northwest of the centre of Paris. In 2018, the commune had a population of 96,807. 2017 FIBA Europe Cup Final
The 2017 FIBA Europe Cup Final were the concluding games of the 2016–17 FIBA Europe Cup season. The Finals were played in a two-legged format, with the first leg being played on April 19 and the second one on April 26, 2017. The first leg was played at Le Colisée in Chalon-sur-Saône, at the home court of Élan Chalon. The LNB Pro A, currently known for sponsorship reasons as Betclic Élite, is the top-tier men's professional basketball league in France. The competition has existed since 1921. Since 1987, the Ligue Nationale de Basket has governed the league. The bottom two placed teams from each season are relegated to the second tier level Pro B. Maurice Thorez
Maurice Thorez (; 28 April 1900 – 11 July 1964) was a French politician and longtime leader of the French Communist Party (PCF) from 1930 until his death. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister of France from 1946 to 1947. Pre-War Thorez, born in Noyelles-Godault, Pas-de-Calais, became a coal miner at the age of 12. He joined the French Section of the Workers' International (SFIO) in 1919 and was imprisoned several times for his political activism. After the 1920 split in the SFIO led to the formation of the French Communist Party (PCF) in December 1920, Thorez became party secretary in 1923 and, in 1930, general secretary of the party, a position he held until his death. After he took office as secretary general, he was supported by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
