Pak Sha Wan () is a village in the Hebe Haven (, Pak Sha Wan) area of Sai Kung District, Hong Kong. History Writing in the period of 1955 to 1958, Austin Coates and James W. Hayes referred to the village as 'Pak Sha Wan Old Village', distinguishing it from the nearby newly established Kau Sai San Tsuen, which they referred to as 'Pak Sha Wan New Village' (). Hebe Haven
Hebe Haven, also known as Pak Sha Wan (), is a harbour on the south shore of Sai Kung Peninsula in Hong Kong. The harbour has one opening to Port Shelter in its south. The Pak Sha Wan Peninsula, spanning south from Tsiu Hang () hugs the Hebe Haven and separates it from Inner Port Shelter (Sai Kung Hoi). Villages are established along its shores. The haven is an excellent natural harbour for yachts and boats and is home to a number of yacht clubs, including the Shelter Cove yacht club (part of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club), and Hebe Haven Yacht Club. There is also a Sea Scouting activity centre situated by the haven. There are numerous moorings and many boats distributed around the area along with a clearly marked navigational channel. Sai Kung District
Sai Kung District is one of the 18 districts of Hong Kong, a special administrative region of China. The district comprises the southern half of the Sai Kung Peninsula, the Clear Water Bay Peninsula in the New Territories and a strip of land to the east of Kowloon. Areas in the district include Sai Kung Town, Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, Tseung Kwan O and over 70 islands of different sizes. The administrative centre had been located in Sai Kung Town until the Sai Kung District Office was relocated to Tseung Kwan O recently. Austin Coates
Austin Coates (1922–1997) was a British civil servant, writer and traveller. He was the son of noted English composer Eric Coates. Austin Coates wrote extensively on topics related to the Asia-Pacific region, particularly Hong Kong and Macau. He was first connected to the East through his service for the Royal Air Force intelligence in India, Burma, Malaysia and Indonesia in the Second World War. After the war, he worked for the Hong Kong government as Assistant Colonial Secretary and Magistrate in the New Territories from 1949 to 1956. As a magistrate, he gained insight on the Chinese customs and character, and he applied Chinese laws to solve many of his cases. After Hong Kong, he was the Chinese Affairs Officer in Sarawak from 1957 to 1959; First Secretary of the British High Commission, Kuala Lumpur and Penang from 1959 to 1962. Hiram's Highway
Hiram's Highway () is a road in Hong Kong connecting the town of Sai Kung to the Clear Water Bay Road at Ta Ku Ling. It also connects with Po Tung Road in the north. Unlike other roads in Hong Kong with the word "Highway" as part of their names, the Hiram's Highway is not an expressway. The road's Chinese name literally means "Sai Kung Highway". It earned its English name from the officer in charge of the Royal Marines who upgraded a Japanese track in the immediate post Second World War years. Major John Wynne-Potts CBE was nicknamed Hiram because he shared the name "Potts" with the "Hiram K. Potts" American brand of tinned sausages. An embellishment of the story suggests he was "addicted" to the sausages. Japanese prisoners of war were deployed in the road's construction. It was considered a reward to the people of Sai Kung for their resistance during the occupation.
