Paddy The Next Best Thing (1933 Film)
''Paddy the Next Best Thing'' is a 1933 American pre-Code romantic comedy film directed by Harry Lachman and starring Janet Gaynor, Warner Baxter and Walter Connolly. The screenplay was written by Edwin J. Burke, based on the 1912 novel '' Paddy the Next Best Thing'' by Gertrude Page and its later stage adaptation, which had previously been made into a 1923 British silent film of the same title. The film reteamed Gaynor and Baxter who had starred together in the 1931 hit '' Daddy Long Legs''. Synopsis Impoverished Irish landowner Major Adair pushes his eldest daughter Eileen to marry the wealthy Lawrence Blake in order to pay off his debts, despite the fact that she is in love with another man. However Adair's younger daughter Paddy falls for Blake herself, and schemes to order events to everybody's happiness. Harry Lachman
Harry B. Lachman (June 29, 1886 – March 19, 1975) was an American artist, set designer, and film director. He was born in La Salle, Illinois on June 29, 1886. Lachman was educated at the University of Michigan before becoming a magazine and book illustrator, contributing 4 colour illustrations to the 1907 work ''John Smith, Gentleman Adventurer'' by Charles Harcourt Ainslie Forbes-Lindsay. In 1911, he emigrated to Paris where he earned a substantial reputation as a post-impressionism, post impressionist Painting, painter and was awarded the Légion d'Honneur by the French government. Lachman's interest in motion pictures stemmed from his position as a set designer in Nice, leading to work on ''Mare Nostrum (1926 film), Mare Nostrum'' in 1925. Margaret Lindsay (born Margaret Kies; September 19, 1910 – May 9, 1981) was an American film actress. Her time as a Warner Bros. contract player during the 1930s was particularly productive. She was noted for her supporting work in successful films of the 1930s and 1940s such as ''Baby Face'', ''Jezebel'' (1938) and ''Scarlet Street'' (1945) and her leading roles in lower-budgeted B movie films such as the Ellery Queen series at Columbia in the early 1940s.
