Përpjekja
''Përpjekja'' (meaning ''Endeavor'' in English) is an Albanian language quarterly culture and literary magazine published in Tirana, Albania. History and profile ''Përpjekja'' was first published in 1994. Its founder is Fatos Lubonja. He is also editor of the magazine, which is published by Perpjekja Center on a quarterly basis in Tirana. Bashkim Shehu, Edi Rama, Ardian Klosi, and Shkëlzen Maliqi are frequent contributors to ''Përpjekja''. The magazine publishes short stories, poems and writings about literary and cultural criticism. The quarterly also features articles on critical evaluations about political developments in the country and about the views of contemporary philosophers and intellectuals such as Jürgen Habermas, George Steiner and Adam Michnik. Fatos Lubonja
Fatos Lubonja (born 1951) is an Albanian writer and dissident. Life Fatos is the son of Todi Lubonja, who was a close associate of Communist leader of Albania Enver Hoxha and head of Albanian national television until the early 1970s. In the course of Hoxha's split with the USSR in 1960, Todi Lubonja was arrested for voicing opposition. Fatos, who had been studying physics in Tirana, was also arrested due to the discovery of his diary, which was critical of Hoxha. Fatos Lubonja was initially sentenced to seven years' imprisonment. He was later accused of belonging to a pro-Soviet circle in the prison and was sentenced to 20 more years. After having spent 13 years at hard labor, he was moved to solitary confinement. There he wrote a diary. Fatos Lubonja was released in 1991, after having spent 17 years in prison and having suffered a nervous breakdown while serving his sentence. Following the collapse of the communist regime in Albania in 1991, the number of magazines increased. It was 71 in 2001 based on the data of the Albanian Media Institute in Tirana. In the following year it was 70. In terms of frequency, the magazines were mostly weekly, bimonthly and quarterly. Jürgen Habermas (, ; ; born 18 June 1929) is a German social theorist in the tradition of critical theory and pragmatism. His work addresses communicative rationality and the public sphere. Associated with the Frankfurt School, Habermas's work focuses on the foundations of epistemology and social theory, the analysis of advanced capitalism and democracy, the rule of law in a critical social-evolutionary context, albeit within the confines of the natural law tradition, and contemporary politics, particularly German politics. Adam Michnik
Adam Michnik (; born 17 October 1946) is a Polish historian, essayist, former dissident, public intellectual, and editor-in-chief of the Polish newspaper, ''Gazeta Wyborcza''. Reared in a family of committed communists, Michnik became an opponent of Poland's communist regime at the time of the party's anti-Jewish purges. He was imprisoned after the 1968 March Events and again after the imposition of martial law in 1981. He has been called "one of Poland's most famous political prisoners". Michnik played a crucial role during the Polish Round Table Talks, as a result of which the communists agreed to call elections in 1989, which were won by Solidarity. Though he has withdrawn from active politics, he has "maintained an influential voice through journalism". George Steiner
Francis George Steiner, FBA (April 23, 1929 – February 3, 2020) was a Franco-American literary critic, essayist, philosopher, novelist, and educator.
