Père Azaïs
François Bernardin Azaïs, known as Père Azaïs, (31 January 1870 – 6 April 1966) was a French missionary and archeologist. He has been called the "father of southern Ethiopian archeology." He was born in Saint-Pons de Thomière (AD34, registre 5 MI74/10 vue n°145 acte n° 20), in the French department of Hérault on 31 January 1870. He became a Capuchin friar, and shortly thereafter expressed his desire to work as a missionary. During his 30 years in Ethiopia (1897-1913 and 1922-1936), he conducted ten archeological expeditions in southern and eastern Ethiopia. Although only some of his findings were published (''Cinq années de recherches archéologiques en Éthiopie''), his unpublished research is stored at the Biblioteca Cappuccini in Rome, at the headquarters of his order. He spent his later years as an ordinary brother in the Capuchin house at Toulouse, where he died on 6 April 1966 at the age of 96. Archaeology Of Ethiopia
Ethiopia has several UNESCO World Heritage Sites related to archaeology which include Axum, one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Africa, the Awash Valley where Lucy, a hominin who lived around 3.2 million years ago was discovered, and Tiya, where Middle Stone Age tools and megaliths have been found. Notable sites and finds Ethiopia is well known for its significant fossil-bearing beds which have borne some of the oldest and most complete fossil hominids. One well-known example is Lucy. Her hominid species ''Australopithecus afarensis'' is named after the Afar Ethiopian region where it was discovered. Other discoveries are still being made. In 2019, archaeologists discovered a 30,000-year-old Middle-Stone Age rock shelter at the Fincha Habera site in Bale Mountains of Ethiopia at over 11,000 feet above sea level. Tiya (archaeological Site)
Tiya is an archaeological site in central Ethiopia. It is located in the Soddo woreda, in the Gurage Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region south of Addis Ababa. It is best known for its archaeological site its large stone pillars, many of which bear some form of decoration. The archeological site was designated a World Heritage Site in 1980, due to the unique nature of these monolithic monuments. Overview According to Joussaume (1995), who led archaeological work at Tiya, the site is relatively recent. It was dated to a time period between the 11th and 13th centuries CE. Later dating places the stelae's construction some time between the 10th and 15th centuries CE.
