Päämaja
''The Headquarters'' ( fi, Päämaja) is a 1970 Finnish historical war drama film written and directed by Matti Kassila. Based on the 1966 Finnish play ''Päämajassa'' by Ilmari Turja, the film describes the mood and atmosphere of the Finnish army headquarters led by Marshal C. G. E. Mannerheim in Mikkeli in the summer of 1944 during the breakthrough of the Karelian Isthmus. Marshal Mannerheim is played by Joel Rinne in his last film role. Differences of opinion regarding the role of Mannerheim caused dispute between Kassila and Rinne during the filming and led to polemics in the press after the premiere. The film's second main character, lieutenant general A. F. Airo, is played by Jussi Jurkka, who won the Jussi Award for Best Actor for his performance. Joel Rinne
Toivo Joel Rinne (6 June 1897, Asikkala – 3 December 1981) was a prolific Finnish actor of stage and screen. Among his most memorable film parts was the title role in the Inspector Palmu movie series, which started in 1960's ''Komisario Palmun erehdys'', and continued in three sequels. Another well-known role in Joel Rinne is in the 1970 film ''Päämaja'', directed by Matti Kassila, in which Rinne interprets in the role of Marshal Mannerheim. Joel Rinne also appeared on the radio. In the 1960's Finnish-language audio drama version of ''Gestatten, mein Name ist Cox'' ("Good Evening, My Name Is Cox"), he played the title character, the adventurer Paul Cox. In the ''Paul Temple'' audio drama series, he was also in the title role. Joel Rinne was married twice. His first wife was actor Rosi Helminen (1896–1964) and his second Saga Rikberg (1908–1983). Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim
Baron Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (, ; 4 June 1867 – 27 January 1951) was a Finnish military leader and statesman. He served as the military leader of the Whites in the Finnish Civil War of 1918, as Regent of Finland (1918–1919), as commander-in-chief of Finland's defence forces during the period of World War II (1939–1945), as Marshal of Finland (1942–), and as the sixth president of Finland (1944–1946). The Russian Empire dominated the Grand Duchy of Finland before 1917, and Mannerheim made a career in the Imperial Russian Army, rising by 1917 to the rank of lieutenant general. Ilmari Turja
Ilmari Turja (28 October 1901 – 6 January 1998) was a Finnish writer, best known as a journalist and playwright, with a career spanning nearly eight decades from the 1920s to the 1990s. Early life and education Kaarlo Ilmari Turja was born to a farming family in Isokyrö in western central Finland, to Jaakko and Evelina Turja. However, when he was four, the Turja family moved to the nearby city of Vaasa, where his father set up in timber trade. After graduating from secondary school in 1922 and completing his military service, Turja went on to study law at the University of Helsinki, obtaining his law degree in 1929 and qualifying as ''Varatuomari'' (Master of Laws with court training, cf. barrister) in 1932. The Continuation War, also known as the Second Soviet-Finnish War, was a conflict fought by Finland and Nazi Germany against the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1944, as part of World War II.; sv, fortsättningskriget; german: Fortsetzungskrieg. According to Finnish historian Olli Vehviläinen, the term 'Continuation War' was created at the start of the conflict by the Finnish government, to justify the invasion to the population as a continuation of the defensive Winter War and separate from the German war effort. Matti Kassila
Matti Kassila (12 January 1924 – 13 December 2018) was a Finnish film director who achieved fame as one of the most prominent Finnish filmmakers in the 1950s and 1960s. He is most famous for the series of four Inspector Palmu movies, based on the character created by Mika Waltari. During his long career, he won seven Jussi Awards, including a concrete Jussi for lifetime achievement, and received numerous other commendations. His 1959 film '' Punainen viiva'' was entered into the 1st Moscow International Film Festival. He was also one of the screenwriters for the 1968 film ''Here, Beneath the North Star'', directed by Edvin Laine. Mikkeli (; sv, S:t Michel; la, Michaelia) is a town and municipality in Finland. It is located in what used to be the province of Eastern Finland and is part of the Etelä-Savo region. Jussi Tapani Jurkka (15 June 1930 – 9 April 1982) was a Finnish actor. He was born into a family of actors. His parents, Eino Jurkka and Emmi Jurkka, were theatre leaders and actors. Also his brother Sakari Jurkka and sister Vappu Jurkka worked as actors, and so did his cousins Rauli Tuomi and Liisa Tuomi. During his career, Jurkka appeared in 32 films, such as ''Morsiusseppele'' (1954), '' The Unknown Soldier'' (1955) and '' Punainen viiva'' (1959). Suomi-Filmi, lit. ''Finland-Film'', is a Finnish film production and distribution company established in 1919 by Erkki Karu. Suomi-Filmi produced around 160 feature-length films and for most of its history was one of the two most important film companies in the country, along with Suomen Filmiteollisuus. The company was home for several noted Finnish film directors, mainly its founder Erkki Karu, and the later two main directors Risto Orko and Valentin Vaala. Aksel Airo
Aksel Fredrik Airo (14 February 1898 – 9 May 1985) was a Finnish lieutenant general and main strategic planner during the Winter War and the Continuation War. He was the virtual second-in-command of the Finnish army under Field Marshal C.G.E. Mannerheim. He was born in Turku. As a young man he became a supporter of Finnish independence. His father changed the original, Swedish, family name Johansson to Airo (lit. "oar"). During the Civil War in Finland (1918), Airo served in the artillery on the White side, taking part in battles near Viipuri. At the end of the war he was a lieutenant. Afterwards he was trained as an officer in Lappeenranta artillery school and was sponsored to the French military academy, École militaire in St.-Cyr in 1920.
