Pál Várhidi
Pál Várhidi (born Pál Vinkovics; 6 November 1931 – 12 November 2015) was a Hungarian football player and a manager. Playing career Club He played for Újpesti Dózsa as a defender and helped the club win the Hungarian League in 1959/60. He was born in Újpest. International Between 1954 and 1957 Várhidi played 10 times for Hungary and he represented his country in 1 FIFA World Cup qualification match. The fringe member of the ''Mighty Magyars'' also took part in the 1954 World Cup but didn't play any games. He is most famous for his participation in the bronze medal-winning Hungarian team on the 1960 Summer Olympic Games. Managerial career After his playing career, Várhidi became a successful coach, leading Újpest to 4 championship titles between 1974 and 1980, and the European Cup semi-final in 1974. The name Újpest means "New Pest" because the city was formed on the border of the city of Pest, Hungary in 1838. Újpest was a village for 6 decades until 1907 when it became a town. The Golden Team ( hu, Aranycsapat; also known as the Mighty Magyars, the Magical Magyars, the Magnificent Magyars, the Marvellous Magyars, or the Light Cavalry) refers to the Hungary national football team of the 1950s. It is associated with several notable matches, including the " Match of the Century" against England in 1953, and the quarter-final ("Battle of Berne") against Brazil, semi-final (against Uruguay) and final of the 1954 FIFA World Cup ("The Miracle of Bern"). The team inflicted notable defeats on then-footballing world powers England, Uruguay and the Soviet Union, before the 1956 Hungarian Revolution caused the breakup of the side. Péter Várhidi
Péter Várhidi (born 8 May 1958 in Budapest, Hungary) is a Hungarian football coach who was national coach of the national team. Career As a player, he spent most of his career at Újpesti Dózsa as a defender, but never played in the Nemzeti Bajnokság I. Over the age 20 he moved to BVSC, where he played a few 1st division matches. Coaching career He became the head coach of Újpest FC in 1997 and became Hungarian champion with the team in his first season. He worked with the team until 2000. Later he was a coach at FC Fehérvár. From 2006 to 2008 he was the coach of the Hungarian national team and was on 26 November 2009 named as Head Coach of Pécsi Mecsek FC.
