Pyrophanite
Pyrophanite is a manganese titanium oxide mineral with formula: MnTiO3. It is a member of the ilmenite group. It is a deep red to greenish black mineral which crystallizes in the trigonal system. Discovery and occurrence It was first described in 1890 from an occurrence in the Harstigen Mine, Filipstad, Värmland, Sweden. Its name was derived from the Greek ''πΰρ,'' fire, and ''φαίνεσθαι,'' to appear, because of the deep red color of the mineral. Its main occurrence is in manganese deposits that have undergone metamorphism. It also occurs in granite, amphibolite and serpentinite as an uncommon accessory mineral. Ilmenite is a titanium-iron oxide mineral with the idealized formula . It is a weakly magnetic black or steel-gray solid. Ilmenite is the most important ore of titanium and the main source of titanium dioxide, which is used in paints, printing inks, fabrics, plastics, paper, sunscreen, food and cosmetics. Structure and properties Ilmenite is a heavy (specific gravity 4.7), moderately hard (Mohs hardness 5.6 to 6), opaque black mineral with a submetallic luster. Geikielite is a magnesium titanium oxide mineral with formula: MgTiO3. It is a member of the ilmenite group. Hendricksite
Hendricksite is a member of the trioctahedral micas group. The mineral was named by Clifford Frondel and Jun Ito in honor of Sterling Brown Hendricks, who studied micas. It was approved in 1966 by the IMA. Physical properties Hendricksite can either form short prismatic crystals, or foliated ones that are platy and seem two dimensional. It occurs in clusters, and these aggregates have interlocking crystals. These crystals are more commonly anhedral - a crystal with no faces, but rarely they can be euhedral - crystals with well defined surfaces. The anhedral crystals can grow up to 30 cm, and are commonly deformed, while the euhedral crystals can reach 14 cms in size of mechanical deformation. Manganophyllite
Manganopyhllite is a manganese-rich variety of biotite. It was first discovered in the Harstigen mine in Sweden. The mineral was first described in 1890. The earliest use is from Edward Dana. Etymology The name manganophyllite also suggests the manganese-rich properties of said gem, as the name originates from the word mangano-, used for substances containing manganese in chemistry. Manganoan biotite is the only synonym of Manganophllite. Properties It shows pleochroic properties, which is an optical phenomenon. Depending on which angle the mineral is inspected, the color of it differs. On the α optical axis, the mineral is pale pink to pink, with an orange tinge, on β and γ axes it is seen in a yellowish brown to dark brown color. Ganophyllite
Ganophyllite is a phyllosilicate mineral. It was named by Axel Hamberg in 1890 from the Greek words for leaf (φύλλον) and luster (γανωμα); the latter one was chosen due to the lustrous cleavages. The mineral was approved by the IMA in 1959, and it is a grandfathered mineral, meaning its name is still believed to refer to an existing species until this day. Tamaite is the calcium analogue, while eggletonite is the natrium analogue of said mineral. Properties Ganophyllite is a member of the ganophyllite group, among with eggletonite and tamaite, and it is the potassium variety of eggletonite.
