Pyotr Bochek
Pyotr Semyonovich Bochek, ( uk, Петро Семенович Бочек; 3 March 1925 – 9 February 2018) was a junior lieutenant of the Soviet Army during World War II and a Hero of the Soviet Union. He was born in the Obrazhiivka village, Ukrainian SSR. He was drafted in November 1943 and commenced active war duty in January 1944. He was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union (Gold Star Medal No. 5867) on March 24, 1945 for heroism during the crossing of the Vistula River. The Order of Lenin (russian: Орден Ленина, Orden Lenina, ), named after the leader of the Russian October Revolution, was established by the Central Executive Committee on April 6, 1930. The order was the highest civilian decoration bestowed by the Soviet Union. The title Hero of the Soviet Union (russian: Герой Советского Союза, translit=Geroy Sovietskogo Soyuza) was the highest distinction in the Soviet Union, awarded together with the Order of Lenin personally or collectively for heroic feats in service to the Soviet state and society. Overview The award was established on 16 April 1934, by the Central Executive Committee of the Soviet Union. The first recipients of the title originally received only the Order of Lenin, the highest Soviet award, along with a certificate (грамота, ''gramota'') describing the heroic deed from the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. The Order of the Patriotic War (russian: Орден Отечественной войны, Orden Otechestvennoy voiny) is a Soviet military decoration that was awarded to all soldiers in the Soviet armed forces, security troops, and to partisans for heroic deeds during the German-Soviet War, known since the mid-1960s in the former Soviet Union as the Great Patriotic War.
