Avril Pyman
Avril Pyman (aka Dr Avril Sokolov, Fellow of the British Academy#Fellowship, FBA; born 4 May 1930) is a British scholar and translator of Russian literature. In addition to translating poetry and children's literature, she has written a study of Russian symbolism, as well as biographies of Alexander Blok and Pavel Florensky. Frank Lee Pyman
Frank Lee Pyman FRS (8 April 1882 – 1 January 1944) was an English academic and commercial research chemist. Pyman was born in Malvern, the eldest son of Frank Pyman and his wife Florence Lee, daughter of Henry Lee MP for Southampton. Pyman was a grandson of George Pyman. He studied at University of Manchester and graduated with his PhD in 1902. He worked with Eugen Bamberger at the Zürich Polytechnic. Being back in England he first joined the Thorpe research group, but Wellcome Chemical Works (now GlaxoSmithKline) in Dartford which he joined in 1905 was a better choice for him. In 1919 he went back to the University of Manchester, where he became professor for organic chemistry. George Pyman
George Pyman (1 May 1822 – 22 November 1900) was a British shipping magnate born in Sandsend, in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire, England. Biography George Pyman was the eldest son of James Pyman and Jane Arr. He was only ten when he took the place in the family fishing coble of his uncle John, who had died. At twelve he became an assistant to the store-keeper in Lythe, but returned to the sea as a bound apprentice a few years later, on a brig called the ''Endymion'' trading with America and in the Baltics. George rose through the ranks, and by the age of twenty-one he was already a captain. His next step was to purchase part of a brig, and over the next few years he left the sea for good, settled in West Hartlepool and entered into a partnership with Thomas Scurr as shipbrokers for the local collieries. Harold Pyman
General Sir Harold English "Pete" Pyman, (12 March 1908 – 9 October 1971) was a senior British Army officer who served during the Second World War and achieved high office in the 1960s. He was the eldest son of Harold English Pyman and Christian Jane Scott, and the great-grandson of George Pyman. Military career Educated at Fettes College and Clare College, Cambridge, Pyman was commissioned into the Royal Tank Corps in 1929. He took part in operations on the North West Frontier of India in 1937. Pyman served in the Second World War, initially as an instructor at the Staff College in Quetta in India from 1939 moving on to be a General Staff Officer in 7th Armoured Division in North Africa in 1942. He was appointed Commanding Officer of 3rd Royal Tank Regiment in North Africa in 1942. Iain Pyman
Iain Pyman (born 3 March 1973) is an English professional golfer. Early life and amateur career Pyman was born in Whitby. He won the Carris Trophy in 1991, and played in a winning Jacques Léglise Trophy team the same year. In 1993 he won The Amateur Championship by defeating Paul Page after 37 holes at Royal Portrush, and was the leading amateur in The Open Championship at Royal St George's. He played in the Walker Cup at the end of 1993. Professional career Pyman turned professional in 1994. His career has fluctuated between seasons on the main European Tour and seasons on the second tier Challenge Tour. He has won eight tournaments on the Challenge Tour, more than any other player, but has not won on the European Tour. Richard Anthony Pyman (born 17 April 1968) is a Singaporean born former English cricketer. Pyman was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm medium pace. Pyman was educated at Ludgrove School and Harrow School, where he captained the school cricket team in 1986. Pyman made his first-class debut for Cambridge University against Essex in 1988. Pyman played 23 first-class matches for the University from 1988 to 1991, with his final first-class match coming against Leicestershire. In his 23 first-class matches he scored 340 runs at a batting average of 13.60, with two half centuries and a high score of 69 against Nottinghamshire in 1989. With the ball he took 32 wickets at a bowling average of 54.78, with best a single five wicket haul of 5/43 against Oxford University in 1989. Robert Pyman
Robert Pyman (born 6 October 1971) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for North Melbourne, Collingwood and Melbourne in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the 1990s. Career AFL A Woodville-West Torrens 'best and fairest' winner in 1992, Pyman was secured by North Melbourne with the sixth pick of that year's draft, which they received after trading Paul Spargo to Brisbane – although Pyman was later personally fined $10,000 when it emerged that he had contacted some of the league's struggling clubs and warned them that he would stay in South Australia if one of those clubs drafted him, which contravened the AFL's draft tampering rules. Sydney Pyman Bell
Sydney Pyman Bell (19 December 1875 – 23 December 1944) was an English rugby union halfback and solicitor. Bell played club rugby for Cambridge University and Northern and played international rugby for the British Isles XV in their 1896 tour of South Africa. Personal history Bell was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1875 to Thomas Bell and Mary Ann Moore and was educated at Uppingham School before graduating to King's College, Cambridge in 1894. He received his BA in 1894 and in 1901 he was admitted as a solicitor. He received the MA from King's College in February the following year. Although practicing as a solicitor, Bell eventually became the Assistant District Manager of Martins Bank for the North Eastern District, before retiring in 1922. He married Constance Jane Laing in 1907 and had two daughters.
