George Alexander Pyke, Lord Tilbury
George Alexander Pyke, Lord Tilbury is a recurring fictional character in the stories of British author P. G. Wodehouse. Pyke is a publishing magnate, the founder and owner of the Mammoth Publishing Company. Outside his business, he has a passion for pigs and is the owner of a prize pig named Buckingham Big Boy. Pyke appears in several novels, including two set at Blandings Castle: '' Heavy Weather'' (1933) and '' Service With a Smile'' (1961). Inspiration According to Robert McCrum, Wodehouse knew the British publishing magnate Lord Northcliffe, who served as a source of inspiration for Lord Tilbury. Magnus Alfred Pyke (29 December 1908 – 19 October 1992) was an English nutritional scientist, governmental scientific adviser, writer and presenter. He worked for the UK Ministry of Food, the post-war Allied Commission for Austria, and different food manufacturers. He wrote prolifically and became famous as a TV and radio personality, and was featured on Thomas Dolby's 1982 synthpop hit, " She Blinded Me with Science". Veronica Pyke (born 11 April 1981) is an Australian former cricketer who played for Tasmanian Roar and Hobart Hurricanes. Early life From Orford on the east coast of Tasmania, Pyke first played senior cricket with the men's team in her home town. Tasmanian Roar Pyke has captained Tasmanian Roar since that team joined the domestic competition. Originally she was known as a left-arm bowler, but over time she has developed into an all-rounder. During the 2012–13 WNCL competition, she scored a total of 151 runs, more than any other Roar player. Margaret Amy Pyke (née Chubb; 1893–1966) was a British family planning activist and pioneer.
