Pyatt Tunnel
The Pyatt Tunnel is a historic railroad tunnel in Marion County, Arkansas. It is a tunnel, hewn through bedrock beneath a ridge north of Crooked Creek and southeast of the city of Pyatt. The tunnel's portals are unimproved, and the tunnel itself has no concrete reinforcement, unlike other tunnels on the White Mountain Division of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, which passes through it. The tunnel was built in 1903–1904, and is one of seven railroad tunnels in the state. The tunnel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Pyatt is a town in western Marion County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 181 at the 2020 census, down from 221 in 2010. Geography Pyatt is located in western Marion County in the valley of Crooked Creek, an east-flowing tributary of the White River. Marion County is located in the Ozark Mountains in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The county is named for Francis Marion, the famous "Swamp Fox" of the Revolutionary War. Missouri Pacific Railroad
The Missouri Pacific Railroad , commonly abbreviated as MoPac, was one of the first railroads in the United States west of the Mississippi River. MoPac was a Class I railroad growing from dozens of predecessors and mergers. In 1967, the railroad operated 9,041 miles of road and 13,318 miles of track, not including DK&S, NO&LC, T&P, and its subsidiaries C&EI and Missouri-Illinois. Union Pacific Corporation, the parent company of the Union Pacific Railroad, agreed to buy the Missouri Pacific Railroad on January 8, 1980. Lawsuits filed by competing railroads delayed approval of the merger until September 13, 1982. After the Supreme Court denied a trial to the Southern Pacific, the merger took effect on December 22, 1982.
