Village Settlements (South Australia)
The Village Settlements were communes set up by the South Australian government under Part VII of the ''Crown Lands Amendment Act 1893'', a scheme intended to mitigate the effects of the depression that was affecting the Colony. It followed the New Zealand V''illage Settlements Act'' and similar schemes in Canada and New South Wales, and concurrently with Victoria. It followed the " blockers" scheme espoused by George W. Cotton. Thirteen settlements were surveyed: Lyrup, Pyap, Kingston, Waikerie, Moorook, Ramco, Holder, Murtho, New Residence, Gillen, New Era and Charleston-on-Murray all on the River Murray, Mount Remarkable in the Mid North, and Nangkita to the south of Adelaide. Holder and Murtho were proclaimed as Village Settlements by May 1896, Lyrup, Pyap, Kingston, Waikerie, Moorook and Ramco followed. __NOTOC__ Spectacle Lake is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the Riverland on the northern side of the Murray River about north-east of the Adelaide city centre and about northwest of Loxton. Its boundaries were created in August 1999 along with the selection of its name which was derived from the Spectacle Lakes, a lake system which is situated within the locality on the floodplain of the Murray River. In 2014, a portion of Spectacle Lake was removed and added to the adjoining locality of Loveday to ensure the full extent of Nynes Island is within Loveday. As of 2012, the land use within Spectacle Lake was divided between conservation and agriculture with the former being concerned with the floodplain. The title for land within Gerard held by the Aboriginal Lands Trust who has leased it to the Gerard Community Council. __NOTOC__ Katarapko is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the Riverland about north-east of the state capital of Adelaide and about north of Loxton. Its boundaries were created in 1999 along with the selection of its name which was derived from Katarapko Island. Its extent includes all of Katarapko Island and some land located to the immediate west of the island. It is bounded on all sides by the following watercourses with exception to part of its western and northern sides - the Katarapko Creek and the Murray River. The southern boundary was revised in 2014 to "ensure the whole of Kapunda Island is within the rural locality of Loxton." The land within the locality is zoned for conservation with the locality being completely occupied by most of the Katarapko section of the Murray River National Park. Loxton is a town on the south bank of the River Murray in the Riverland region of South Australia. It is located on the lands of the Erawirung people who occupied the area before European colonisation. At the 2016 census, Loxton had a population of 4,568. It is a service town for the surrounding districts. Loxton's primary productions are agriculture & horticulture. Citrus fruit, wine grapes, almond and stone fruit trees are prevalent. Loxton is also the main town for the northern part of the Murray Mallee which is a dryland farming and grain cropping area. Loxton High School provides secondary education for the area. Loxton has a pioneer settlement museum (known as the Loxton Historical Village), preserving the heritage of the mallee region. Wunkar is a small town in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia. County Of Alfred
The County of Alfred is one of the 49 cadastral counties of South Australia on the south banks of the River Murray. It was proclaimed by Governor James Fergusson in 1868 and named for Prince Alfred, second son of Queen Victoria, who visited the state in 1867. The entirety of the county, along with the Hundred of Moorook in the adjacent County of Albert, was proclaimed as the District Council of Loxton in 1910. In 1916 the hundreds of Paringa and Murtho seceded from Loxton's north to form the new District Council of Paringa, and the hundreds of Allen, Kekwick and McGorrery seceded from the south to form the new District Council of Brown's Well.
