Pussycat (band)
Pussycat was a Dutch country and pop group led by the three Veldpaus-sisters: Toni, Betty, and Marianne. Other members of the band were guitarists Lou Willé ( Toni's then-husband), Theo Wetzels, Theo Coumans, and John Theunissen. Their song " Mississippi" was a #1 hit in most European countries, including the UK, in 1975/76. Career Prior to forming the band, the three sisters were telephone operators in Limburg, whilst Theunissen, Wetzles, and Coumans were in a group called Scum. Lou Willé played in a group called Ricky Rendall and His Centurions until he married Toni, and created the group Sweet Reaction that eventually became known as Pussycat. In 1975 they scored a big European hit with the song " Mississippi". However they had to wait a further year for the single to make the British charts when it climbed to number one in the UK Singles Chart in October 1976. The Pussycats were a Norwegian rock band from Tromsø. Their members from 1963 to 1967 were bassist and vocalist Sverre Kjelsberg, guitarist and vocalist Trond Graff, drummer Kaare Larsen, lead guitarist Ottar Aasegg, and keyboardist and vocalist Ingemar Stjerndahl. After a few months in Norway, they went out to Stockholm and were discovered by Sten Ekroth. And the year later they recorded their first album, ''!!Psst !!Psst!!'' Kama Sutra Records was started in 1964 by Arthur "Artie" Ripp, Hy Mizrahi and Phil Steinberg as Kama Sutra Productions, a production house. ''Pussy Cats'' is the tenth album by American singer Harry Nilsson, released by RCA Records in 1974. It was produced by John Lennon during his " Lost Weekend" period. The album title was inspired by the bad press Nilsson and Lennon were getting at the time for being drunk and rowdy in Los Angeles. They also included an inside joke on the cover – children's letter blocks "D" and "S" on either side of a rug under a table − to spell out "drugs under the table" as a rebus. Recording and development The album was started in Los Angeles, but Lennon ultimately finished producing it in New York, where he could better control the sessions. During the recording sessions, Nilsson ruptured one of his vocal cords but chose to keep this from Lennon. He forced himself to push through the sessions, which caused even more damage, that some (including The Monkees' Micky Dolenz) say he never quite recovered from. The album is a song-for-song cover of the 1974 Harry Nilsson album '' Pussy Cats'' which was produced by John Lennon. The decision to cover the ''Pussy Cats'' album, which is a band favourite, started off as a joke that evolved into a full-fledged album released only 5 months after their previous record, ''A Hundred Miles Off''. The album also served as a last project for the band's studio, Marcata Recording. Marcata, which band members Matt Barrick, Paul Maroon and Walter Martin built in 1999, was located in a building owned by Columbia University, which took the property back in 2006. The Ames Brothers were a singing quartet, consisting of four siblings from Malden, Massachusetts, who were particularly famous in the 1950s for their traditional pop music hits. The Pussycat Theaters were a chain of adult movie theaters, operating between the 1960s and the 1980s. Pussycat Theaters had 30 locations in California and were known for their cat-girl logo. To date, only one exists. History David F. Friedman and Dan Sonney founded Pussycat Theaters. Dan Sonney invented the name, based on Woody Allen film ''What's New Pussycat''. Friedman has also cited the Pink Pussycat burlesque club on Santa Monica Boulevard as having previously established the word "pussycat" in relation to "pink" porn, since the early 1960s.
