Purplish Honeycreeper
The purplish honeycreeper (''Chlorophanes purpurascens'') is a bird in the Thraupidae, or tanager family (biology), family. It is known only from the type (biology), type specimen, a trade-skin held in the Natural History Museum, London, British Museum, and is thought to be an hybrid (biology), intergeneric hybrid between the green honeycreeper (''Chlorophanes spiza'') and either the red-legged honeycreeper (''Cyanerpes cyaneus'') or the blue dacnis (''Dacnis cayana''), though Carl Edward Hellmayr, Hellmayr, in his ''Catalogue of birds of the Americas and the adjacent islands'', considered it a good species. The type locality on the specimen's label was given as Caracas in Venezuela. However Robert Winthrop Storer, Storer, when discussing the specimen and the characteristics of its preparation, suggested that it was more likely to derive from the Paria Peninsula of northern Venezuela. The tanagers (singular ) comprise the bird family Thraupidae, in the order Passeriformes. The family has a Neotropical distribution and is the second-largest family of birds. It represents about 4% of all avian species and 12% of the Neotropical birds. Traditionally, the family contained around 240 species of mostly brightly colored fruit-eating birds. As more of these birds were studied using modern molecular techniques, it became apparent that the traditional families were not monophyletic. The blue dacnis or turquoise honeycreeper (''Dacnis cayana'') is a small passerine bird. This member of the tanager family is found from Nicaragua to Panama, on Trinidad, and in South America south to Bolivia and northern Argentina. It is widespread and often common, especially in parts of its South American range. The green honeycreeper (''Chlorophanes spiza'') is a small bird in the tanager family. It is found in the tropical New World from southern Mexico south to Brazil, and on Trinidad. It is the only member of the genus ''Chlorophanes''. Taxonomy The green honeycreeper was formally described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in the tenth edition of his '' Systema Naturae'' under its current binomial name ''Motacilla spiza''. He specified the type locality as Suriname. The specific epithet is the Ancient Greek word for a common finch.
