In 1983, she decided to become a psychologist, enrolling at Yeshiva University. She continued playing music while pursuing her PhD, and began to have some success as part of a duo with Colvin. Between Five And Seven
''Between Five and Seven'' is (as the name suggests) the sixth studio album by folk singer-songwriter John Gorka. It was released in August 1996. It is the last of the five albums Gorka recorded for Windham Hill/ High Street Records before returning to the smaller, Red House label. Gorka produced the album with John Jennings who also produced Gorka's previous record, ''Out of the Valley''. Unlike the previous record made in Nashville, Tennessee, the recording was done at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota and the instrumentation has been described as "more acoustic, less pop-oriented.""The Graham Weekly Album Review #1038"

Out Of The Valley
''Out of the Valley'' is a 1994 album by contemporary folk singer-songwriter John Gorka. This is Gorka's fifth album and unlike the previous four recorded in various places in the northeastern United States, ''Out of the Valley'' was recorded at Imagine Sound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. This is also the first of several Gorka albums to employ the talents of guitarist/producer John Jennings. Guest vocalists include country music superstars Kathy Mattea and Mary Chapin Carpenter among others. Guest instrumentalists include guitarist Leo Kottke, Fairport Convention drummer Dave Mattacks, and bluegrass virtuosos Jerry Douglas and Tim O'Brien. A notable absence is the voice of Lucy Kaplansky whose background vocals have been a feature of all other Gorka albums. This is perhaps Gorka's most commercial album and is his only work to have ranked on one of ''Billboard's'' charts. It peaked at # 26 on the "Heatseekers" chart. Reactions to the increased level of commercial prod ...

Temporary Road
''Temporary Road'' is the fourth album by folk singer-songwriter John Gorka. In 1992 there was some critical consensus that Gorka was one of the leading male voices of the "new folk" movement. As titles like "Looking Forward" and "Gravyland" might imply, the album has an overall optimistic tone. High Street Records produced videos for the upbeat "When She Kisses Me" and "I Don't Feel Like a Train", both of which received some airplay on CMT. Despite the upbeat tone of many tracks the album also contains some darker political commentary. The title track, and "The Gypsy Life" offer reflections on the first Gulf War. "Can You Understand My Joy?" is asked in an ironic, sarcastic way. The mix of moods in Gorka's songs helped earn him the description of "the dark optimist."Anil Prasad"John Gorka: The Dark Optimist" ''Interviews'', January 19, 1992 Track listing All songs written by John Gorka # "Looking Forward" – 4:03 # "Baby Blues" – 3:40 # "The Gypsy Life" – 4;23 # "Vi ...

Jack's Crows
''Jack's Crows'' is an album by the American folk musician John Gorka. It was released in 1991. The album's title was supplied by Jack Hardy. "House in the Fields", for which a video was produced, was marketed to country music outlets. Production The album was produced by Dawn Atkinson and Will Ackerman. Its songs are mostly set in the small towns near the border between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Unlike during the recording sessions for his previous albums, Gorka recorded most of ''Jack's Crows'' with all the musicians present in the studio at one time. It was Gorka's intention to move on from the love songs of previous albums to songs about places and people. Shawn Colvin sang on two of ''Jack's Crows tracks. Critical reception ''The Washington Post'' wrote that "Gorka matches his subtle, intelligent and original songwriting with a deep, thrilling baritone ripe with masculine melancholy, that makes whatever he's singing fairly unforgettable." The ''Ottawa Citizen'' stated th ...

Land Of The Bottom Line
''Land of the Bottom Line'' is the second album by contemporary folk singer-songwriter John Gorka. The album was also Gorka's major label debut for High Street Records/Windham Hill Records. The album was highly acclaimed by critics at the time, and continues to be cited by some as Gorka's finest work. The album's fifteen tracks and near hour-long length also provided an unusually large amount of music for a recording of that era. As ''Sing Out!'' editor Mark Moss noted in a review, the topics covered run "the gamut of John's favorite subjects: love, hard luck, local characters, and more." Track listing Personnel Musicians: (see individual song listings below) Production: * Produced – Bill Kollar * Recorded/Mixed – Bill Kollar at London By Night Productions, Woodbridge, New Jersey * Assembled – Rhonda Schoen at Sterling Sound, New York City * Mastered – Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound, New York City, using the AUDIO AUTOMATION MUSE CONSOLE * Arrangement ...

Red House Records
Red House Records is an independent folk and Americana record label in St. Paul, Minnesota. The label was founded in 1983 by Bob Feldman after seeing a performance by Iowa folk singer Greg Brown. Origin The label is named for a farmhouse in Iowa where Brown was living when he started it. After Brown's albums ''44 & 66'' and ''The Iowa Waltz'' were released in 1981 and 1982, it briefly went dormant until he met Bob Feldman in 1983. Feldman took over operation of the record label, while Brown focused on his musical endeavors, as he had just signed on to regularly perform on the radio program ''A Prairie Home Companion''. Feldman was known for his business philosophy of wanting "to provide a home and environment in which creative artists can make albums in total freedom—without interference from mogul types just looking for the next hit single." The first album released on the newly restarted label was Brown's ''In the Dark with You''. Over the next few years, the label focus ...
