Al Purdy
Alfred Wellington Purdy (December 30, 1918 – April 21, 2000) was a 20th-century Canadian free verse poet. Purdy's writing career spanned fifty-six years. His works include thirty-nine books of poetry; a novel; two volumes of memoirs and four books of correspondence, in addition to his posthumous works. He has been called the nation's "unofficial poet laureate" and "a national poet in a way that you only find occasionally in the life of a culture." Biography Born in Wooler, Ontario, Purdy went to Albert College in Belleville, Ontario, and Trenton Collegiate Institute in Trenton, Ontario. He dropped out of school at 17 and rode the rails west to Vancouver. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Jedediah Spenser Purdy (born 29 November 1974 in Chloe, West Virginia) is an American legal scholar and cultural commentator. He is the William S. Beinecke Professor of Law at Columbia Law School, where he teaches courses on American Constitutional Law, Constitutional Law and Democracy and its Crisis. From 2004 to 2018 Purdy was a professor at Duke University. Everett Virgil "Pid" Purdy (June 15, 1904 – January 16, 1951) was an American professional athlete who played in both Major League Baseball and the National Football League. He was a native of Beatrice, Nebraska, and attended Beloit College. He was tall and weighed . As a baseball player, Purdy was an outfielder who batted left-handed and threw right-handed. His professional career extended from 1923 through 1938 and much of it was spent in minor league baseball in his native Nebraska, where he toiled in the Class A Western League and the Class D Nebraska State League. He compiled a lifetime minor league batting average of .328 in 1,437 games. The Cleveland Elementary School shooting (also known as the Stockton schoolyard shooting and the Cleveland School massacre) occurred on January 17, 1989, at Cleveland Elementary School in Stockton, California, United States, when 24-year-old Patrick Purdy, who had an extended criminal history, shot and killed five students and wounded 32 others. As first responders arrived at the scene, Purdy committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. His victims were predominantly Southeast Asian refugees. Margaret Purdy (born January 18, 1995) is a Canadian former competitive pair skater. With Michael Marinaro, she is the 2013 World Junior silver medalist and 2010 Canadian national junior champion. Personal life Purdy attended the University of Western Ontario from September 2014 to 2018, studying social sciences. Career Purdy started skating at age four as a hockey player and switched to figure skating at age seven. In May 2007, Purdy teamed up with Michael Marinaro to train in pairs. Kenneth William Purdy (April 28, 1913 – June 7, 1972) was an American automotive writer and editor. He was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1913, and raised mostly in Auburn, New York, by his mother after his father, songwriter William Thomas Purdy (1882–1918) (''On, Wisconsin!'') died when Ken was only six. Ken graduated in 1934 from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Soon after he got his first newspaper job with the Athol, Massachusetts ''Daily News''. John Purdy (1773–1843) was an important English hydrographer. His work and influence extended beyond hydrography with the coinage of the term pharology, the study of modern lighthouses and their designs. Purdy's work ''Memoir, descriptive and explanatory, to accompany the New Chart of the Atlantic Ocean'' was adapted and improved; continuing to be released in its fifteenth edition fifty years after his death. Life The son of a bookseller at Norwich, Purdy took up the study of naval charts and similar subjects. Before 1812 he succeeded De la Rochette as hydrographer to Messrs. Laurie & Whittle, of 53 Fleet Street, London.
