Purdy Bridge
The Purdy Bridge is a continuous reinforced concrete box girder bridge that spans , with a central span of , between Henderson Bay and Burley Lagoon. The bridge connects Purdy, Washington with the Purdy Sand Spit Park and Wauna, Washington. Purdy Bridge was completed on September 29, 1937, at a cost of $62,000, from a design by Homer M. Hadley. It was the first bridge in the United States to utilize a reinforced-concrete box girder design and it was the longest continuous box girder bridge in the United States at the time. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Purdy, Washington
Purdy is a small unincorporated community and census-designated place north of the city of Gig Harbor, at the junction of Washington State Routes 16 and 302 on the northern boundary of Pierce County, Washington. It is located on the shores of Burley Lagoon and Henderson Bay, Washington of the Carr Inlet. The two bodies of water are separated by a sandspit and the Purdy Bridge, all within the Puget Sound. The Washington Corrections Center for Women, originally named the Purdy Treatment Center, is colloquially referred to as "Purdy", though it has a Gig Harbor address. Box Girder Bridge
A box girder bridge, or box section bridge, is a bridge in which the main beams comprise girders in the shape of a hollow box. The box girder normally comprises prestressed concrete, structural steel, or a composite of steel and reinforced concrete. The box is typically rectangular or trapezoidal in cross-section. Box girder bridges are commonly used for highway flyovers and for modern elevated structures of light rail transport. Burley Lagoon
Burley Lagoon is a picturesque watershed located on the Key Peninsula in both Pierce County, Washington and Kitsap County, Washington. The lagoon is part of the Puget Sound. Approximately sixty percent of the lagoon (marine waters) is in Pierce County and forty percent in Kitsap County. The percentages in each county are reversed for the watershed uplands. All of the commercial shellfish acreage, which is owned by Western Oyster Company, is in Pierce County. Historically rural, the lagoon is experiencing rapid growth as more people move to the area.
