Bernard Purdie
Bernard Lee "Pretty" Purdie (born June 11, 1939) is an American drummer, and an influential R&B, soul and funk musician. He is known for his precise musical time keeping and his signature use of triplets against a half-time backbeat: the "Purdie Shuffle." He was inducted into the ''Modern Drummer'' Hall of Fame in 2013. Purdie recorded ''Soul Drums'' (1968) as a band leader and although he went on to record ''Alexander's Ragtime Band'', the album remained unreleased until ''Soul Drums'' was reissued on CD in 2009 with the ''Alexander's Ragtime Band'' sessions. Other solo albums include ''Purdie Good!'' (1971), '' Soul Is... Pretty Purdie'' (1972) and the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film ''Lialeh'' (1973). Robert James Purdie (born 28 September 1982) is an English retired footballer who last played for Hereford as a midfielder. Purdie was a versatile Utility player who played primarily as an attacking midfielder, but he could also play in the full-back position, in midfield, or in the "hole" as a striker. Playing career Hereford United He began his career at Leicester City where he played for the U19 and reserve teams, but not for the first team. In his final season he played several matches for Hereford United's reserves before signing for them in July 2002. Alexander Callender Purdie
Alexander Callender Purdie (25 December 1824 – 24 June 1899) was a New Zealand naturalist and botanist. Early life Purdie was born in the parish of Fenwick, East Ayrshire, Scotland. After his schooling he moved to Glasgow acquiring a trade as a wire worker which he pursued in England and Scotland for several years, while also following his interest in natural history. He emigrated with his wife Ellen in 1860 from Glasgow to New Zealand on the ship “''Pladda''”, and settled in Dunedin. Work Purdie was a foundation member of both the Otago Institute in 1869, of which he was elected Curator and Librarian in 1873, and the Dunedin Field Naturalists’ Club, in 1872. He also had a long association with the Otago Museum, of which he was caretaker or curator, and then with the University of Otago where he was a janitor until his retirement in 1893. Ethel Ayres Purdie
Ethel Ayres Purdie ( Ayres) (1874–1923) was a chartered accountant and suffragist. She specialised in counselling women and women's suffragist organisations. She was active in the Women's Tax Resistance League which argued that no vote meant no tax. Personal life Ethel Ayres was born in 1874 in Islington, London. Her father was an engineer toolmaker. After leaving school, she worked for the Post Office in the Telegraph Department. She married Frank Sidney Purdie in 1897, and they had two children. Career Ayres Purdie began her suffragist work in 1894 at a trade union protest against the treatment of female telegraphists. The telegraphists contributed to pension funds that they never received, as the women typically left their jobs when they were married. Ayres' protest wanted women to receive a portion of the money. Henry Augustus Purdie (December 16, 1840 – March 29, 1911) was an American ornithologist and naturalist. He was a founding member of the American Ornithologists' Union, and a president of the Nuttall Ornithological Club. Biography Purdie was born near Smyrna, Turkey. He was the son of John Purdie, a British consul, and Eleanor Pratt, his Massachusetts-born wife. Although born in the Ottoman Empire, he moved to West Newton, Massachusetts as a child. By 1858, Purdie was devoting himself to ornithology, collecting nests and eggs. However, in 1862 he joined the navy to fight in the American Civil War. He was discharged the next year for frequent seasickness. After the war, Purdie made connections with leading ornithologists and became a founding member of the Nuttall Ornithological Club, serving as its vice president in 1873 to 1875, and then the president from 1875 to 1876. Bernard Charles Purdie (born 20 April 1949 in Wrexham, Wales) is a former professional footballer who played as a striker for his hometown club Wrexham before making the short journey across the border to join English neighbours Chester in 1971. Brad Purdie (born July 11, 1972) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey centre. Early life Born in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec, Purdie spent four seasons with the Maine Black Bears men's ice hockey team. Career Purdie began his professional career in the East Coast Hockey League with the Dayton Bombers and the Peoria Rivermen, and in the American Hockey League with the Cornwall Aces before spending three seasons in the International Hockey League.
