Pupuke Rugby League Club
The Pupuke Rugby League Club were a rugby league club which existed briefly in 1917 and competed in the Auckland Rugby League competitions. They were based in Takapuna on Auckland's North Shore in New Zealand. 1917 season On May 17, 1917, the Pupuke rugby league club was granted affiliation with the Auckland Rugby League at their weekly management meeting. They entered a single team in the 3rd grade competition. The Observer newspaper reported that “Takapuna is the latest recruit to Northern Unionism. Forty-three lads there have formed a club to be known as the Pupuke Club. One team has been entered in the third grade competitions to play in all red jerseys”. Their first match was against Newton Rangers at 3pm on May 19 at Takapuna with the referee Mr. F. Tyson. There was no result reported in the newspapers for the match. 1917 Auckland Rugby League Season
The 1917 Auckland Rugby League season was its 9th. Due to the large number of players now serving in the First World War it was agreed to relax transfer rules to allow players from stronger teams to join weaker teams to even the competition. It was noted how many men from various clubs had been killed in battle by the beginning of 1917. Northcote Tigers
The Northcote Tigers are a rugby league club based in Northcote, Auckland, Northcote, New Zealand. 1925 Auckland Rugby League Season
The 1925 season of Auckland Rugby League was its 16th. On 30 March Auckland Rugby League held its fifteenth annual meeting with 200 in attendance. The strong financial position of the league was commented on. It was also decided that if possible the Senior Grade would be split into A and B divisions owing to the increasing number of teams who wished to enter but also the gap in standard between the best teams and the worst. Trophy winners City Rovers won the First Grade Championship for the 7th time in just 15 seasons. Ponsonby Ponies, Ponsonby won the Roope Rooster Knockout competition for the 4th time in the 11 seasons it had been competed for. Ponsonby also won the Stormont Shield after defeating City in the final in its inaugural season. Takapuna Rugby League Club
Takapuna is a suburb located on the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand. The suburb is situated at the beginning of a south-east-facing peninsula forming the northern side of the Waitematā Harbour. While very small in terms of population, it was the seat of the North Shore City Council before amalgamation into Auckland Council in 2010 and contains substantial shopping and entertainment areas, acting as a CBD for the North Shore. History The Māori place name Takapuna originally referred to a freshwater spring that flowed from the base of North Head into a swamp behind Cheltenham Beach. The 1921 season of Auckland Rugby League was its 13th. Seventy two teams played across its six main grades. The first grade competition featured seven teams, City Rovers, Marist Old Boys, Maritime, Devonport, Fire Brigade (formerly Grafton Athletic), Newton Rangers, and Ponsonby United. City Rovers comfortably won the senior championship for the 4th time with a 8 win, 1 draw, 0 loss record ahead of Maritime who were unable to repeat their title win from the previous season. 1918 Auckland Rugby League Season
The 1918 Auckland Rugby League season was its 10th since its inception in 1909. It was again severely affected by the ongoing war with several hundred players serving overseas and 44 killed who were named in the annual report. North Shore Albions withdrew from the competition early in the season and on other occasions teams played short-handed. There was also a truncated representative program with only a trial match and one full Auckland rugby league team, Auckland representative match versus Canterbury rugby league team, Canterbury, which was played at the Auckland Domain in front of 10,000 spectators. The senior grade featured six teams. Ponsonby Ponies, Ponsonby United won their second consecutive title with an 8-win–1-loss record. North Shore Albions
The North Shore Albions were a rugby league club based on the North Shore of Auckland in Devonport, New Zealand, Devonport before moving to Bayswater at a later time. They formed in 1909 and folded in the early 2000s due to a lack of playing numbers. At the start of the 1920 Auckland Rugby League season, 1920 season they were renamed Devonport United when they amalgamated with the Sunnyside club. It was proposed at the merger that they be known as North Shore Albions but Sunnyside objected and the name of Devonport United was chosen. In 1937 Auckland Rugby League season, 1937, 17 years later at their annual general meeting they decided to revert to the name "North Shore Albions" as they had been commonly referred to as "shore" for many years. The Auckland Rugby League (ARL) is the governing body for the sport of rugby league in the Auckland Region of New Zealand. It is responsible for rugby league in the region, including both club and school rugby league. It began in 1910 when the first season of club league in Auckland occurred. The first match was a practice game between Newton Rangers and Ponsonby United at Victoria Park which Ponsonby won 17 to 15. The first full club season was in 1910.
