Charlotte County is a U.S. county located in southwestern Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 186,847. Its county seat is Punta Gorda. Charlotte County comprises the Punta Gorda, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the North Port-Bradenton- Sarasota Combined Statistical Area. History Charlotte County was established April 23, 1921. Before this, the Charlotte County area was a part of Desoto County. It was named for the Bay of Charlotte Harbor. "Charlotte" came from "Carlota" (Spanish). In 1565, the Spanish named "Bahia de Carlota", followed by the English in 1775 who named the area Charlotte Harbor in tribute to Queen Charlotte. Punta Gorda is the only incorporated city in Charlotte County. On August 13, 2004, Charlotte County, Hurricane Charley came ashore near Port Charlotte as a Category 4 hurricane. Old Charlotte County Courthouse
The Old Charlotte County Courthouse is an historic two-story yellow brick courthouse building located at 226 Taylor Street in Punta Gorda, Florida. Designed in the Classical Revival style by architects Leitner and Henson of St. Petersburg, Florida, St. Petersburg, it was built between 1927 and 1928 by Paul H. Smith of Haines City, Florida, Haines City. Additions were made to the building the 1960s and 1980s but in 1999 it was replaced by a new Justice Center and then fell into disuse. In 2005, the additions having been demolished, the Board of County Commissioners undertook the restoration and renovation of the original 1928 structure that remained. It was reopened to the public in a ceremony on February 29, 2008.
